Author Tran Van Hung excitedly said that the field trip from August 11 to 15 of the Ho Chi Minh City Stage Authors Association in Dong Thap and Can Tho brought back many new topics, promising to have good scripts for the Ho Chi Minh City stage in the near future.
Focus on creative team
Without a good script, there can be no effective performance, so taking care of the creative team is always a priority for the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association.
A scene from the play “Deep Night” by Quoc Thao Stage - a place that gives young actors many opportunities to shine.
From 2022 to present, the Young Authors Club led by two authors Tran Van Hung and Tran Dang Nhan has gathered 20 young authors. Initially, 6 young authors have achieved very positive results. Author Moc Linh (won first prize for the script "Green Dreams"); An Son (won "Best Local Script" for the script "Bitter" at the "Short And Sweet" International Drama Festival 2024); Hoang Duy Linh (won C prize for the script "A Million Arms of People" at the Ministry of Public Security's Scriptwriting Camp 2023); Ky Phuong (won A prize for the script "The King Without a Throne" - Youth and Children's Writing Campaign 2023 and B prize for the script "Brilliant Star" - 2024 Writing Camp - Vietnam Stage Artists Association)... The good news is that these scripts have all been staged on stages in Ho Chi Minh City.
At the National Professional Art Theater Festival on "The Image of the People's Police Soldier" V-2025, 4 stages: Hong Van, Quoc Thao, Truong Hung Minh and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema Association also gave performances to new faces: Lam Vy Da, Minh Luan, Mi Le, Bao Bao, Le Nam, Luu Thi Ngoc Mai, Thach Thao, Hien Nhi, Lac Hoang Long, Bui Cong Danh... In the near future, these actors will continue to try their hand at the 2025 National Experimental Theater International Festival in Ninh Binh .
Ho Chi Minh City has 8 socialized units participating in the 2025 National Experimental Theatre Festival, including Vu Luan, Trinh Kim Chi, Sen Viet, Hong Van, Lam Vy Da, Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema, Quoc Thao and Xom Kich.
A clear aesthetic shift
People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc commented: "I don't think our stage is running out of energy as many people say. Through the festival, I see many new faces performing well, shining on stage, having inner strength and being willing to learn. What I hope is that after the festival, young people will continue to be given opportunities, not only to perform but also to be creative and mature."
Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong commented: "I see a clear aesthetic shift. The recent staged works on the city stage have dared to raise questions, dared to argue, and cut out interpretation to focus on direct emotions. The actors also expressed better psychological depth. Stepping out of the comfort zone is what the stages need to aim for."
The participation of socialized art troupes shows the attraction and leading role of Ho Chi Minh City theater, not only in performance but also in learning and professional exchange. People's Artist Thoại Miêu acknowledged: "Currently, many young faces approach cải lương with a comprehensive theatrical mindset, knowing how to combine music, body, dance and dialogue to renew the stage."
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Yen Chi added: "The Ho Chi Minh City stage does not lack young talents, the important thing is to create an environment for them to grow. It is necessary to pay attention to building an urban stage ecosystem when the new Ho Chi Minh City has a large audience from Ba Ria - Vung Tau and the old Binh Duong".
With the goal of creating a young force to succeed the Ho Chi Minh City stage, in addition to the above-mentioned playgrounds, Ho Chi Minh City will soon have the 2nd Ho Chi Minh City Stage Festival and the Tran Huu Trang Professional Cai Luong Stage Actor Talent Competition in 2025.
