Training talent for the new era

Vietnam is about to enter a new era, an era of national development. In this context, education and training need to change its thinking, train and nurture talents according to each individual, with critical thinking, creativity and global skills to adapt to a changing world.

P COMPREHENSIVE LEARNER DEVELOPMENT

The country is entering a new era, needing many talented people in all areas of social life. People in general are not the same, each person is an individual, has his own ability and talent. The thing is that human talent and talent are like natural resources, not located right on the ground, but deep underground, in the sea, it takes investment of effort, intelligence, technology to find. Therefore, for students, there need to be many methods, solutions, multi-dimensional and multi-directional impacts to discover the hidden potentials deep inside each person.

With general education, the comprehensive foundation is to help each student develop 5 core qualities: patriotism, compassion, diligence, honesty and responsibility; develop 10 competencies, with 3 general competencies, including autonomy and self-study, communication and cooperation, problem solving and creativity; and 7 specific competencies, including mathematics, science, language, information technology, technology, physical and aesthetics, focusing on critical and creative thinking, accepting change, learning artificial intelligence (AI).

In recent years, primary and secondary schools across the country have organized many activities, clubs, scientific research, and many intellectual playgrounds to discover talents. Thanks to that, many non-specialized students in disadvantaged areas have still achieved high national and international awards. At the same time, training in specialized schools not only focuses on improving knowledge and skills in specialized subjects, but also on diversifying activities, emphasizing individual capacity when solving practical problems, such as scientific research, engineering, the Road to Olympia competition, English speaking competitions, implementing practical projects and giving students earlier opportunities. Thanks to that, 10th grade students can win gold medals at international Olympiads, such as Ngo Quy Dang (High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University, Mathematics in 2020) and Vo Hoang Hai (High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University, Physics in 2022). Students of Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted have brought the Road to Olympia television show to the province 8 times, which is proof of diversity and promotion of individual talent.

For vocational education and higher education, academic knowledge is no longer enough to meet the needs of the modern labor market, but it is necessary to train learners with 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, adapting to change, self-study, self-research, self-improvement and lifelong learning. To do so, students do not only focus on studying in the classroom, but also study in different environments, in libraries, laboratories, practice, internships and work in enterprises, many national and international competitions and start-up incubation. From there, learners' talents can be discovered and promoted.

FOCUS ON PRACTICALIZATION OF EDUCATION

Pragmatism in education is not training people according to narrow pragmatism, but this characteristic is shown in three aspects.

That is the knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualities that are truly useful to learners, linked to practice, minimizing theory and distance from reality. It can be affirmed that the 2018 General Education Program follows this practical direction when minimizing theoretical knowledge, increasing practice and defining the goal: "Helping students master general knowledge, know how to effectively apply the knowledge and skills learned in life and self-study for life, have a suitable career orientation, know how to build and harmoniously develop social relationships, have a rich personality, character and spiritual life, thereby having a meaningful life and contributing positively to the development of the country and humanity".

Education in the new era focuses on knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualities that are truly useful to learners, linked to practice, minimizing theory and distancing from reality.

The educational program must be linked to reality, to the socio-economic situation of the locality and the country, including issues that are happening globally. From there, learners are able to solve practical problems. The fact that Vietnamese students, not only specialized students, have won high prizes in international scientific and technical research competitions every year has demonstrated their approach to new fields on par with high school students in other countries.

Finally, education and training must be linked to local and national human resource needs. Vietnam's national human resources in the new era need to be trained at a high level in the fields of science, technology, engineering, especially digital technology, digital engineering, AI, semiconductors, nuclear... along with social sciences and humanities associated with digital technology.

Therefore, it is necessary to encourage students to study and take exams in natural sciences, mathematics, and technology to harmonize human resources; avoid the trend of students choosing social sciences for easy study and easy exams. Ho Chi Minh City is a typical example of linking education with local human resource needs when the rate of students choosing natural sciences to take the high school graduation exam is high. In 2024, this rate in Ho Chi Minh City will be 60.85% while the national average is 37%.

Two glorious eras of the nation

According to General Secretary To Lam, from 1930 to now, under the leadership of the Party, the Vietnamese people have gone through two glorious eras: the era of gaining independence, freedom and building socialism (1930 - 1975). Second, the era of national reunification, innovation and development (1975 - 2025).

And now, according to General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam is entering the third era, the era of national growth, which will start at the 14th National Party Congress in 2026. The era of growth implies creating a strong, decisive, resolute, positive, effortful, self-reliant, self-reliant, and national pride movement to overcome challenges, surpass oneself, and realize the aspiration of reaching a prosperous and happy country.

The era of national development goes hand in hand with the digital era, innovation and creativity, in which the common voice of humanity is "nothing is impossible". The 4.0 industrial revolution and new technologies are and will disrupt the way of thinking, production and living of countries, communities and each person. Reality requires us to strongly innovate in thinking and perception, create many breakthroughs, especially breakthroughs in institutions, science and technology, training high-quality human resources, attracting and promoting talents.

Faced with this opportunity, education and training cannot fall behind reality, but must pioneer, lead the way, go one step ahead, and create breakthroughs to train high-quality human resources.

Strongly deploy smart education

It is necessary to strongly deploy smart education to train the workforce to meet the requirements of the 4.0 industrial revolution and AI; put learners at the center of providing modern learning services, suitable for each individual; education is flexible, adaptive, modern, continuously developing, applying AI in teaching, learning and management; invest in smart technology including hardware, software and data. Education uses big data of the country and humanity for learning, but is the place to create data sources, supplementing big data of the country and humanity. Therefore, smart education is the key to training human resources in the digital age, the era of innovation, creativity "rising up of the nation".
