Sony removed the word “smartphone” from its websites introducing its manufacturing processes in China and Thailand in mid-May, ahead of the launch of its new Xperia model, the Sumaho Digest website reported.
That means Sony will be outsourcing production of the Xperia 1 VII to a third-party partner, similar to what it has done with its mid-range phones in recent years.
The Xperia 1 VII is expected to hit the market by the end of June. Therefore, it is currently difficult to predict whether the product's level of completion will be consistent with previous devices produced by Sony itself.
GSMArena and Stuff both have early reviews of the phone, but neither has mentioned any major changes to the build quality. Moving production to a third party could help Sony cut costs, as its partners can operate at a larger scale.
Sony Xperia is one of the most expensive Android phones available today, but the production move doesn't seem to have changed the price of the Xperia 1 VII. It's even selling for more than the previous version.
Sony announced the Xperia 1 VII in mid-May. The device is positioned in the high-end segment with a basic configuration including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, a 6.5-inch OLED LTPO screen, 12 GB RAM, a triple camera set including a 48 MP wide angle, a 48 MP ultra-wide angle and a 12 MP telephoto camera, a 5,000 mAh battery, 30 W fast charging, and 15 W wireless charging support.
Xperia 1 VII comes in blue, purple, and black; pre-orders start at 1,499 EUR (equivalent to 1,700 USD ) for the 265 GB internal memory version in the European market. This price is higher than the Xperia 1 VI version launched a year ago.
