Visiting Mai Son Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities, we noticed that the school's facilities are more spacious and modern after taking over the facilities of the former College of Agriculture and Forestry. The classrooms, dormitories, physical education areas, and libraries have been newly built and basically repaired to meet the teaching and learning needs of teachers and students.

Teacher Tran Van Phuc, Principal of the School, said: In the 2025-2026 school year, the school has 12 junior high and high school classes with 436 students, 100% of whom are ethnic minority children from communes in the old Mai Son district. The school has 35 staff, teachers, and employees, of which 28 are direct teachers. With the task of training ethnic minority students according to the policies of the Party and the State, in addition to recruiting students based on input quality, the school also accepts many ethnic minority students with very few people in remote areas without taking exams. Therefore, the students' qualifications are uneven; many students are limited in social skills, behavior, and living habits. Recognizing these difficulties, the school has built a special educational method, taking ethics, love, and responsibility as the foundation.

It is known that most of the students have difficult economic circumstances, their parents live in poor villages, do not have the conditions to provide for their children, many parents do not even know how to speak the common language. Therefore, since the students entered school, the teachers have always accompanied, cared for, shared and encouraged them.

Teacher Pham Thi Hoa, Vice Principal of the school, said: From faraway villages, students gather at one school to learn and train under the dedication of teachers. Far becomes close, strange becomes familiar, the boarding school becomes a warm home, a second home for ethnic minority students. After only a short time of enrolling, especially junior high school students, they have stabilized their mentality, focused on studying and training.

To improve the quality of teaching and learning, right from the beginning of the school year, the school has surveyed the quality and classified students to have timely, appropriate and effective remedial measures. Along with that, constantly innovate teaching methods and test and evaluate according to the correct standards of knowledge and skills; actively apply information technology in management as well as teaching and learning.

The school also directs subject groups to develop plans and educational activities in the direction of developing students' abilities and qualities; arranging lessons in textbooks into a number of thematic lessons, in order to save time and facilitate the application of active teaching methods. In particular, the school incorporates and integrates local history content and the revolutionary tradition of the homeland into history, civic education and educational activities, improving students' understanding.

Every year, the school develops a review and tutoring plan for weak students; trains good and excellent students to participate in competitions for excellent students at all levels; provides many types of review questions, guides students to find reference and advanced books to help them study better.

In the teaching sessions at school, teachers apply information technology in teaching; classrooms are equipped with projectors connected to the Internet for students to update information and look up learning materials; the library is invested in repair and supplemented with many books... From there, raising awareness and access to rich knowledge to serve students' learning more effectively.

In addition to organizing 2 sessions/day, on some evenings during the week, the school arranges teachers to tutor, support and guide the students. For grade 12, the school organizes extra classes for students to review for graduation exams; focuses on career counseling based on students' abilities, family economic conditions, and local needs to help them choose suitable majors.

Students exchange lessons outside of class time.

Song Manh Tong, grade 12, Mai Son Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities, shared: Studying at the school from grade 6 until now, thanks to the teachers' dedicated care, guidance, and meticulous study method guidance, I have always achieved the title of good student. We will try our best to study well so as not to let down the teachers.

The school cares about the health of boarding students, organizes extracurricular activities, life skills education, law, physical training and activities based on talent and interest groups to attract students to participate. In particular, the preservation and promotion of national cultural identity is emphasized through students wearing traditional costumes on some days of the week and participating in clubs and cultural activities typical of each ethnic group.

The dormitory kitchen ensures compliance with regulations.

Meal care is organized with 3 meals/day according to the standard support, ensuring food safety and hygiene; the menu is regularly changed, with enough nutrition to help students have good health to study and practice.

Thanks to the efforts of teachers and students, the school's educational quality is constantly improving: The rate of good and excellent students is over 70% every year; good and excellent training is 99.5%; 100% of students pass the next grade. In the 2024 - 2025 school year, Mai Son Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minority Boarding Students is the only boarding school classified as "Excellently completing tasks"; 38 students won prizes in excellent student competitions; 100% of 12th graders passed high school graduation, the average score of all subjects is higher than the average of the whole province, of which 3 subjects (History, Geography, Economic - Legal Education) are higher than the national average; the 12th grade graduation score is among the top in the province.

With the viewpoint of teaching literacy along with training people, Mai Son Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minority Boarding School has affirmed its position in the province's education sector, worthy of being the place to help many generations of ethnic minority students fulfill their dreams, contributing significantly to the cause of improving people's knowledge and training human resources for the locality.
