Linking rice seed production

In the Tánh Linh rice-growing region, the local authorities have always prioritized expanding and improving the effectiveness of value chain linkages for products with potential and advantages in the district, coupled with the innovation of appropriate production organization methods. Among these, along with cashew nuts and rubber, rice is one of the three main key products that receive significant attention.

The rice seed production area utilizes cluster transplanting and sowing machine services.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tanh Linh district, in 2023 and the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season, the locality implemented a cooperative partnership between Loc Troi Group and three communes, Dong Kho, Duc Binh, and Gia An, to produce rice seeds, initially achieving some promising results. Accordingly, the total area for rice seed production was 63.65 hectares with the purebred rice varieties OM5451 and OM18. In addition, the area for socialized rice seed production in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season reached 312 hectares, including over 4 hectares producing super-purebred seeds by Loc Troi Group JSC in Dong Kho commune.

Linking rice seed production in Tánh Linh.

These results were mentioned at a recent conference summarizing the rice seed production linkage between Loc Troi Seed Company and farmers in Dong Kho commune. Through this linkage with Loc Troi Seed Company, farmers in the commune received training on rice seed production processes, signed contracts for production linkage with services including rice transplanters, sprayers, agricultural supplies, and technical staff who closely monitored farmers throughout the growing season. The harvested rice is priced according to market prices 5-7 days before harvest. Currently, Dong Kho commune has a total rice production area of ​​642 hectares, of which nearly 82 hectares are dedicated to rice seed production. According to the model's evaluation, the average yield reached 6.3 tons/ha, with a purchase price of 9,400-9,600 VND/kg, which is 1,100 VND/kg higher than the market price. Particularly in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season, the area participating in the linkage program exceeded 11 hectares/11 farming households. The households implementing the model reported that the profit from rice seed production using the cluster sowing method was 1.7 million VND/ha higher than traditional production. Furthermore, a comparison of the two models (cluster sowing/transplanting) with traditional production shows that the linkage program for rice seed production is still more profitable for farmers. However, the most noticeable effect is seen from the second crop season onwards, as well as in subsequent seed production seasons.

Leaders of the Tánh Linh District People's Committee, along with representatives from various units and farmers, visited the rice fields in the integrated rice production area.

Aiming for 3 uniformities

According to the leaders of the Tanh Linh District People's Committee, local farmers are increasingly interested in using certified rice seeds in rice production, thus increasing the percentage of certified rice seeds to over 95% in the district. Farmers who apply scientific advancements to production, sow sparsely, save on seed costs, and have a long-term product purchasing unit will bring high profits.

However, the current difficulty lies in the small, fragmented area of ​​land among the households involved in the linkage, and some households failing to eliminate cross-contamination, resulting in substandard seeds. Therefore, according to Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc, three elements of uniformity are necessary: ​​uniformity in seeds, uniformity in production processes, and uniformity in products. Only then can all stages of the linkage, from input to output, be ensured. The People's Committee of Tanh Linh district and the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center also requested and hoped that relevant departments, communes, and towns, along with the linked units and farmers, would promote the application of science and technology in rice production, and transfer modern and advanced farming techniques to farmers.

From the business perspective, the local authorities hope to continue providing support to Tánh Linh district in applying technology and further developing rice seed production linkages in the future. They also hope for increased technical support and improved production processes, especially in removing impurities to ensure a high seed yield, guaranteeing higher incomes for farmers participating in seed production compared to commercial rice.
