(CPV) - The forum aims to promote communication activities to implement solutions, initiatives, models, experiences, and technologies for rational and effective water use to ensure water security for the Mekong Delta region.

On the afternoon of November 29, the Department of Irrigation, the Southern Institute of Irrigation Science, the Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper in collaboration with relevant units organized the Forum "Promoting communication on rational and effective water use to ensure water security in the Mekong Delta" in Can Tho.

The project to ensure water security and safety of dams and reservoirs for the period up to 2030, with a vision to 2045, clearly states the viewpoint that “Water is essential for life, a national resource, plays a particularly important role in the rapid and sustainable development of the country, ensuring national security, contributing to improving people's lives, and protecting the environment. Ensuring water security and safety of dams and reservoirs is an urgent and objectively inevitable issue; it is the responsibility and obligation of the entire political system and the entire population”.

However, according to the report of the Department of Irrigation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in recent times, although the Central and local governments have made many efforts in managing and regulating available water resources, development activities, urbanization, industrialization, restructuring of agricultural production and people's uneconomical water usage habits have been and are creating great pressure on infrastructure, especially the infrastructure system serving water supply for daily life, agricultural production, aquaculture, urban drainage, and wastewater treatment.

As for the Mekong Delta (MD), this is the largest rice granary, seafood granary, and fruit granary in the country, but it is facing serious challenges related to water security.

Prominent issues include: The increase in hydropower dam chains in the upper reaches, the diversion of the Mekong River flow to other areas, the decline in soil and water quality, changes in land use with conflicts in water allocation, low water use efficiency, overexploitation of water resources, along with the increasingly obvious impacts of climate change and rising sea levels... These challenges directly threaten the livelihoods of local people and national food security.

Speaking at the Forum, Mr. Vu Minh Viet, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper, said that with the presence of many experts, managers and researchers with deep knowledge of the Mekong Delta, the Forum hopes to receive valuable contributions from delegates so that the Nine Dragons land can achieve its general goal of ensuring the quantity and quality of water for people's lives in all situations; meeting the water needs for agricultural, aquatic, industrial and business production of all sectors and fields, especially the important and essential agricultural, aquatic and economic sectors. All people and all subjects have access to and use water fairly and reasonably. Proactively store and regulate water resources, prevent natural disasters and adapt to climate change, ensuring sustainable development of the Mekong Delta based on the viewpoints of "Proactively living with floods", "Living with salinity and brackish water", "Flood prevention in urban areas"...

The media plays an important and indispensable role in raising awareness, changing behavior and promoting specific actions to protect water resources in the Mekong Delta to implement Conclusion No. 36 of the Politburo on "Raising awareness of the importance of ensuring water security, dam and reservoir safety in the new situation".

In the context that the Mekong Delta is facing many challenges regarding water security, the media is not only a means to spread messages but also a bridge between scientific knowledge and practical action. A methodical, diverse and creative communication strategy will greatly contribute to ensuring water security, promoting sustainable development for this potential land of Nine Dragons to develop and soar./.
