Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice: Farmers reduce 50-65% of seed sowing

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, this Summer-Autumn crop, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment deployed 11 models under the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta, with a total area of over 543 hectares, attracting 355 households to participate.

Farmers reduced the amount of seeds sown by 50-65%, reduced nitrogen fertilizer by more than 31%, cut down 1-3 spraying times, managed water effectively and collected all straw for reuse. As a result, production costs decreased by 326-1,052 VND/kg of fresh rice, profits reached 14.5-36.3 million VND/ha, higher than the control outside the model by 4.6-15.8 million VND/ha. The model has affirmed its effectiveness, creating momentum for expansion on a larger scale in the following crops.

In Vinh Long province, the model of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice continues to be highly appreciated and replicated. In the Summer-Autumn rice crop, the project has deployed 2 pilot models (2 cooperatives/98.4 hectares/94 households), ST24 rice variety, seeding amount of 6-10 kg/1,000 m2, rice is in the flowering-ripening stage and growing well. In addition, 30 cooperatives participate in the replication model with an area of over 4,000 hectares/3,557 households.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment directed that in the coming time, localities need to continue to replicate the model in the 2025-2026 Winter-Spring crop, ensuring large-scale production, promoting the application of mechanization and digital transformation in agriculture. At the same time, focus on training for farmers, cooperatives and community extension staff; it is necessary to create conditions for businesses to accompany from input to output consumption.
