"Let it go"

Recently, in Hue , many paper donation points have appeared at green restaurants and cafes. This is “Let do roll away”, a “green” action by young people from Legend of Hue, a creative and entertaining content design unit, aiming to spread traditional cultural and historical values to the younger generation and friends from all over the world, sponsored by the Institute for Development Studies of Thua Thien Hue province. Not simply donating paper, Legend of Hue created the “Let do roll away” festival with the desire to help people get in touch with a variety of paper art forms, instructing people on how to make handmade paper or create from paper.

Legend of Hue has a bi-weekly activity called Sunday Handicraft & Art, a space to experience Hue's traditional and modern crafts. Through the process of organizing and researching, you realize that up to now in Hue, the uniqueness in the craft story does not lie in the successive generations of artisans, but in the diversity in the way Hue artisans develop product lines. The most outstanding thing is paper products. From traditional items such as Sinh village paintings, Thanh Tien paper flowers... to new-age products such as Truc Chi paintings, May PaperFlower paper flowers,...

Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh (born in 1997), founder of Legend of Hue, shared: “The more we research paper and the development process of paper in Hue, we believe that “Let it roll” will be the first activity where we can tell everyone about the story of paper in Hue, and also the first “touch” point for everyone to try their own dexterity and meticulousness with paper in Hue culture”.

On the “Let the paper roll away” festival, people not only get to listen to the story of paper but also participate in activities such as: Paper mache to make a lion head; paper flowers; scented paper; paper from leftover vegetables; kite making and drawing; calligraphy on do paper; notebook binding; stamp carving to decorate notebooks; painting with natural colors; Japanese-Vietnamese cultural exchange: Origami (Japanese paper folding art) and enamel boxes. Participants will experience “going to the market” with green vegetable markets, paper toy markets, green goods markets with environmentally friendly packaging, and notebook making craft booths.

To be able to organize a paper festival like this, it is not possible to grasp all the information about traditional craft villages and paper products of Hue in just one or two days. Even now, after being exposed to the culture, history and traditional product makers of Hue for quite a long time, as Hanh confided, she only dares to say that she knows... a little. The young girl born in 1997 said: "During the implementation process, we had the opportunity to meet and receive a lot of support from our brothers and sisters, researchers. We also thank the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Development Research Institute and the Thua Thien Hue Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for their support and connection. Thanks to that, our group was able to realize the idea, contributing to preserving the paper culture of the Ancient Capital."

The purpose of this event is to gather and introduce traditional and contemporary products in Hue made from paper; at the same time, promote innovation in traditional products using paper, spread the spirit of avoiding waste and living green with environmentally friendly materials. This is also an opportunity to create a special summer meeting place for young people. You have boldly organized to donate old notebooks, notebooks with leftover paper after each school year to process into notebooks to give to children in A Luoi. This is also a good way to avoid wasting paper. And the beautiful little notebooks also give wings to beautiful ideas, spreading joy to children in the highlands.

The paper collection activity was carried out with the desire to foster environmental protection awareness in the community, and the collected paper products also remind people to limit and refuse to use plastic products. Currently, dozens of units have agreed to accompany and support Legend of Hue, such as: Da:me café, Nhien café, Leaf café, View café, Olab café, An Nhien Garden Vegetarian, Midori Sweet, De-po café, Yang café, Nha Ben Ho café, KODO... “I did not expect our idea to be supported by so many restaurant, cafe and eatery owners. Many of you have promised to continue participating when we carry out environmental protection activities and reduce plastic waste. It is great that the spirit of “For a green, clean, bright Hue” has permeated the people of Hue, we just need to awaken that spirit for a green, clean and safe Hue.” Hong Hanh said with a smile.

The “Let it Go” festival will officially take place on July 8 at KODO Garden (36-38 Nguyen Phuc Nguyen). The event will take place in the form of a special market, helping people “touch” paper and its applications in Hue’s traditional and contemporary culture.
