On December 29, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the structure and sample questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam, adding two new multiple-choice test formats compared to the current one.
The 2025 high school graduation exam includes two compulsory subjects: Math and Literature. In addition, candidates can choose two subjects from the remaining subjects in the general education program, including: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Literature, Geography, History, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology and Foreign Languages (7 languages: English, German, Russian, Japanese, French, Chinese, Korean).
In total, the Ministryof Education and Training announced the sample exam structure for the 2025 high school graduation exam for 17 subjects.
The Ministry said the test is designed to assess capacity, in line with the 2018 general education program. Based on the capacity table - thinking level attached to the test, learners will know how many parts the test consists of, which multiple choice questions are included and which capacity components are included in the test.
Because the 2018 program has just been implemented to grade 11, the illustrative questions mainly use knowledge from grades 10 and 11. The Ministry added that the questions in the questions "try to be associated with meaningful contexts", meaning they have certain effects and values on life and scientific practice.
Regarding question types , except for Foreign Language subject which only uses multiple choice test format like every year, the remaining subjects will have additional true-false test and fill-in-the-blank questions.
"The new question format requires candidates to have comprehensive capacity, knowledge and skills to achieve maximum scores, limiting the use of tricks," the Ministry said.
Regarding the number of questions , the Math and Foreign Language exams have been reduced from 50 to 34 and 40 questions respectively, while the other subjects remain unchanged. The reason for the Math exam is that the additional question format is intended to test students' thinking and ability at a higher level, so students need more time to answer.
The number of questions in the Foreign Language subject has been reduced because the test time for this subject has also been shortened by 10 minutes compared to the current time. This is because Foreign Language has become an optional subject, so the test time will be the same as the remaining subjects.
2025 is the year when the first batch of students under the new general education program will take their graduation exams. Currently, the high school graduation exam is organized with 6 subjects, including Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Natural Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Social Science (History, Geography, Civic Education).
Thus, the number of exam subjects from 2025 will be reduced by two and the number of exam sessions by one. The Ministry of Education and Training assesses that this plan will help reduce exam pressure for students, reduce costs for their families and society.
Regarding the method of considering and recognizing high school graduation in 2025, the Ministry said that it will combine the results of the assessment process and the results of the graduation exam at an appropriate rate. In addition, the exam will maintain the paper-based exam format until 2030, and after 2030, a pilot computer-based exam with multiple-choice subjects will be conducted in qualified locations.
