“Blood Free” is a horror film about Yoon Ja Yoo (Han Hyo Joo) - CEO of the genetic engineering company BF - who opens a new era of artificially cultured meat in 2025 and Woo Chae Woon (Joo Ji Hoon) - a former soldier, currently Ja Yoo's bodyguard.
Not only did Disney+ invest 24 billion won for 10 episodes, but the new project also attracted attention when it was written by Lee Soo Yeon - the screenwriter who won the Best Screenplay award at the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards for the movie "Stranger".
Screenwriter Lee said that she chose the theme of cultured meat as the main theme of the film because of her own desire for a future where animals do not need to be slaughtered for consumption and forests do not need to be destroyed to produce food.
Regarding this, the female lead Han Hyo Joo confessed: “After reading the script for the first time, I thought the theme and story were smart because it is something we can deal with in this era.
At that time, I read the entire script and even wrote a diary entry on the day I read it. I remember feeling so happy thinking, “Finally, a good script like this has come to me.” Receiving such a script made my heart beat so fast.
For Joo Ji Hoon, the actor said, “Blood Free” deals with a topic that can be a bit heavy and requires deep thought.
“The script made us all ask, ‘Why don’t we try to think about this story?’ I admire the author for writing a story that makes us think about how we should approach food production in the future.”
With a new topic, exploited for the first time on Korean screen, not only the crew but also the media have high expectations that "Blood Free" will receive the love of the audience - like how "Moving" (Super Teen Team) did before.
As for Han Hyo Joo, she initially had a hard time understanding the character Yoon Ja Yoo. In the end, she chose not to express the character's emotions, and also changed her tone of voice to become deeper, making it difficult for viewers to determine whether she was good or evil.
The actress also revealed that she memorized all of her character’s lines before arriving on set. “I like to act with a sense of liveliness. I can read the lines from a teleprompter, but I want to do it perfectly, so I try to memorize everything.”
Meanwhile, Joo Ji Hoon confessed that he encountered some obstacles when having to perform many action scenes, including the scene where Woo Chae Woon fought alone against a group of 17 people.
The reason is because the actor suffered from gout and tinnitus - the after-effects of constantly gaining and losing weight while filming previous movies. However, he still tried to complete the scenes well.
“We (Joo Ji Hoon, director, martial arts director - PV) discussed a lot about how to shoot action scenes and chose authenticity instead of flashy scenes.
To be honest, even with careful preparation, there is still a risk of injury when filming action scenes. However, I tried my best to film,” he added.
“Blood Free” is scheduled to be released on April 10.
