Physics exam for high school graduation 2025: Cluster questions appear to assess sequential thinking ability

The Physics exam for this year's high school graduation exam for candidates following the 2018 General Education Program includes 28 objective multiple-choice questions. Many questions are linked to scientific-experimental and life contexts, as well as appearing in the form of cluster questions, assessing chain thinking, showing a shift in the way new exam questions are created.

According to teachers, 2025 marks a strong shift in assessment and evaluation, with an orientation focusing on developing students' qualities and abilities. Accordingly, this year's high school graduation exam for Physics also clearly demonstrates this spirit.

The official Physics exam has a structure of 28 objective multiple choice questions (40 questions; to be completed in 50 minutes), divided into 3 parts: Part I includes 18 four-choice multiple choice questions; Part II includes 4 true-false multiple choice questions (each question has 4 questions); Part III includes 6 short-answer multiple choice questions.

"The content of the exam closely follows the requirements of the 2018 GeneralEducation Program for Physics, mainly from the 12th grade program, and a small part of the knowledge from the 11th grade program," analyzed the Physics teachers of the HOCMAI Education System.

The ratio of questions according to the thinking level of Knowing/Understanding/Applying is about 40%/30%/30%, focusing on assessing 3 components of Physics capacity: Physics perception; Understanding the natural world from a Physics perspective; Applying learned knowledge and skills.

According to teachers' analysis, the difference between the 2025 high school graduation exam for Physics and previous years is not only in the exam structure and new question formats (true or false questions and short answer questions) but mainly in the content and the way of asking questions following the trend of linking Physics knowledge with meaningful contexts, creating practical situations and rich educational values: Life context (Photos, practical applications, meaningful questions); Scientific context (Experiments, with models, data).

Specifically, questions 3, 4, 5, 6 of Part III (Short answer test), code 0220, the context is related to practical applications in life, questions 3 and 4 integrate content related to the field of Chemistry. The questions are intentionally designed to properly assess students' reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

Questions 3 and 4, Part II (True or False) of test code 0220 are set in experimental models in the topics of Magnetic Fields and Thermal Physics. To understand measuring devices and phenomenon models, students are required to read, understand and process scientific data like an experimenter.

In addition, the exam includes some questions integrating 11th grade knowledge. (question 1 part II integrates knowledge about Waves), requiring students to know how to apply basic knowledge from lower grades to analyze phenomena and solve situations in questions with contexts related to grade 12 knowledge. This approach demonstrates the assessment orientation according to the content of the new program.

A notable new point in this year’s high school graduation exam is the cluster question format – a text accompanied by 2 component questions. For example, cluster questions 2,3 and cluster questions 4,5 of part III, code 0220, consecutive questions revolve around the same topic to help assess the ability to think in a chain: From understanding the context → identifying phenomena → performing calculations → explaining or comparing results.

The 2025 Physics High School Graduation Exam clearly shows the change in assessment thinking in general education. This is an important basis to help students and teachers adjust their teaching and learning methods in a positive and proactive direction, enhancing application and practice factors.

For students in later courses, especially grade 12 students in the 2025-2026 school year, learning needs to be in the direction of understanding the nature of physics - applying it flexibly - linking knowledge with practice.

"Early preparation, systematizing knowledge according to the curriculum content, enhancing data reading and comprehension skills, analyzing context and interdisciplinary integrated thinking will be the key to help students not only pass the graduation exam, but also master physics knowledge to apply to study, life and future science and technology fields," the teacher advised.
