After the 2025 high school graduation exam ended, Thanh Nien Newspaper received feedback from readers about the chemistry exam.
Readers said that "The high school graduation exam for chemistry, code 0347, question 15 mentioned that carbocation is a positively charged ion on a carbon atom. However, in the CH3 group, the question only shows 1 dot, not a + sign like other subatomic particles. This leads to students choosing answer 2 instead of 3. Some other exam codes show a + sign in the CH3 group."
That's why readers are worried, thinking that it's unfair for candidates to do different chemistry test codes.
In response to this reflection, Thanh Nien reporter spoke with Master Pham Le Thanh, a chemistry teacher at Nguyen Hien High School (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City).
Master Thanh explains: The dot symbol on CH3 and the + symbol on CH3 are different. The methyl radical (CH3•) is a free radical. The methyl cation radical (CH3+) is a carbocation. Depending on the symbol in the question in the exam code, there will be different answers.

Nguyen Hien High School teacher further explained that a free radical is an atom or group of atoms with one or more unpaired electrons. A carbocation is defined as a positive ion, in which a carbon atom carries a positive charge. Therefore, Master Thanh affirmed that there is no problem with question number 15 of test code 0347 and does not affect the rights or fairness of candidates in each test code.
Teacher Le Thanh added that this is a question within the chemistry subject, however the question command has provided information, students who read, understand and perceive chemistry can answer it.
