On the morning of June 27, nearly 353,000 candidates nationwide took the high school graduation exam in English according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program.
The high school graduation exam in English has many similarities with the IELTS exam.
Master Do Thi Ngoc Anh, an English teacher at DOL Dinh Luc, who achieved 8.5 IELTS and won a master's scholarship at the University of the West of England (UK), commented that this year's high school graduation exam in English has certain similarities with the IELTS exam.

The test has questions that require a high level of comprehension, similar to the IELTS reading test, creating a significant challenge for candidates. Question types such as finding main ideas, finding detailed information, understanding vocabulary in a specific context, inference questions... all require candidates to understand the passage deeply.
In addition, candidates need to be able to distinguish between reading for details and reading for general information, summarizing the issue. This requires flexibility in applying both detailed and general reading skills to grasp information effectively.
Ms. Ngoc Anh assessed the average score of this year’s English test at around 6-7 points. Although the test was difficult, she assessed it as a good test. According to the female teacher, the topics in the test are close to Vietnam and to young people.
The female teacher suggested applying the essential thinking method to grasp the main idea of a sentence through the structure, then grasp the main idea of the whole paragraph through the connection between sentences. This method helps candidates to be able to guess vocabulary in context, even when encountering difficult words or specialized words that they are not familiar with.
Based on the way the English exam questions are set this year, students in the next year need to practice reading comprehension skills, knowing how to select words to read and words to skip, without affecting their ability to understand the main idea of the entire reading passage.
“Greenwashing”: Unexpected Difficult Point in the Exam for Many Candidates
According to the female teacher, the topics in this year’s English exam are close to Vietnam and to young people, especially those who are diligent in updating their knowledge about social life, such as the reading comprehension about “greenwashing”. This is a content that has been actively mentioned by domestic media in recent times.
However, for many candidates, “greenwashing” is the most challenging vocabulary in this year’s English exam. “Greenwashing” can be roughly translated as “greenwashing”, this is a form of individuals, organizations, businesses... sending out false messages or intentionally causing confusion.

Definition of “greenwashing” according to the Cambridge dictionary (Photo: Cambridge Dictionary).
They pretend that the products and services they provide are environmentally friendly and meet sustainable development criteria, but in reality, these are just marketing gimmicks that do not reflect the true nature of the product or service.
"Greenwashing" is a term that combines "green" and "whitewashing". "Green" stands for green development, sustainable development, and environmental protection. "Whitewashing" means covering up and painting something different from reality.
Basically, "greenwashing" is about polishing one's image, showing responsibility to the community in protecting the environment, but in reality, everything is done superficially, even fake, not going into the substance, mainly just for "show".
The term "greenwashing" appearing in the exam is a linguistic challenge, requiring candidates to constantly update current news and social knowledge through mainstream news channels.

This can be considered a new trend of English exams in the coming years, when the exam not only tests the language ability of candidates, but also requires candidates to have background knowledge of current issues and "hot" topics in social life.
With the trend of questions requiring a certain understanding of current events, candidates need to prepare themselves mentally and have good skills to respond flexibly, even when encountering unexpected terms or topics in the exam room.
