According to the plan, the North-South expressway in the east has a total length of about 2,055 km. To date, 1,652 km have been put into operation, of which about 1,222 km are currently 4 lanes with limited traffic, including the sections from Mai Son to Cam Lo, Quang Ngai to Phan Thiet and some other sections.
The Ministry of Construction has proposed to prioritize the immediate expansion to 6 lanes for 18 component projects in the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City section, with a total length of about 1,144 km. Southern sections such as My Thuan - Can Tho - Ca Mau have not been considered for expansion at this stage due to low transport demand and complicated construction conditions.
The Ministry of Construction has proposed to implement the project under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The route sections will be divided into two major projects in the North and South. The purpose of this is to combine sections with high financial efficiency with sections with low efficiency, thereby minimizing state budget support and ensuring the uniformity of the entire route.
