Proposal to build the first two '6-storey apartment' projects for pig farming in Vietnam

A company has just sent a document to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment proposing to build a 6-storey smart pig farm complex with two projects in Tay Ninh and Binh Phuoc.

On June 5, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien had just chaired a meeting with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and related units on the proposal to pilot a smart multi-storey pig farming model.

At the meeting, Deputy General Director of BAF Vietnam Agricultural Joint Stock Company Nguyen Van Minh said that the company has sent a document to the ministry proposing to build a 6-storey smart pig farm complex with 2 projects.

The first project in Tan Chau (Tay Ninh) has a scale of 64,000 breeding sows, producing 1.6 million commercial pigs per year, and the project in Dong Phu (Binh Phuoc) has a scale of 20,000 sows, producing 500,000 commercial pigs per year.

These two projects are planned by BAF Vietnam to be implemented according to the multi-storey farm model, in strategic cooperation with Muyuan Group (the largest pig farming unit in China) - featuring a multi-storey farm model, integrating modern technology in management, waste treatment, air filtration, deodorization and environmental protection.

Regarding project implementation, Mr. Minh said that there are currently no specific regulations on livestock density for this type of model.

Although there is a standard TCVN 14209:2024 for multi-storey livestock farming models, specific legal criteria on environment, construction licensing and environmental impact assessment are still unclear, causing difficulties in the process of completing licensing application documents.

According to Mr. Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, currently Vietnamese law has no regulations prohibiting the raising of livestock and poultry in multi-storey houses.

The high-tech pig farming model in high-rise buildings is consistent with the state's policy on promoting research, application and transfer of science and technology.

Mr. Dang suggested that the company pay special attention to issues related to the environment and disease safety.

With high stocking density and closed environment, if not strictly controlled, the risk of disease spreading will be very high, especially when one infected fish can cause an outbreak in the entire stocking area.

Welfare and livestock density need to be implemented appropriately for each region and province, ensuring reasonable distances between farms and residential areas and other areas.

In addition, the company needs to implement measures to strictly control the slaughtering, processing and traceability of products, while ensuring that the waste treatment system meets standards and developing a clear consumption and export plan for output products.

Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien highly appreciated the efforts of BAF Vietnam in the process of innovation and development of Vietnam's livestock industry.

In the spirit of encouraging and creating favorable conditions for businesses to invest, Mr. Tien requested the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to closely coordinate with the company to carefully review the legal basis and regulations to implement the project.

Mr. Tien also emphasized that the company must develop a risk response plan, a product consumption and export plan, as well as complete related procedures before actual implementation.

This is an important preparatory step to promote the industrialization of pig farming, contributing to stabilizing supply and improving the domestic product value chain.
