Hanoi craft villages lack quality raw material supply

Currently, Hanoi's craft villages still lack quality raw materials, one of the important input factors.

On August 2, the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade organized a conference to connect supply and demand of input materials for the handicraft industry between Hanoi and the northern provinces.

The event is part of the 2025 OCOP Export Products Fair (Vietnam OCOPEX 2025), taking place from August 1 to 3.

At the conference, Mr. Vuong Dinh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Center for Industrial Promotion and Development Consulting (Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade) said that Hanoi's handicraft products have quality, design, and brand. Some products have competitive advantages in foreign markets.

However, handicraft products in general still do not meet market requirements, have not fully exploited their potential and value, and lack ideas for designing and developing new products.

The reason is that businesses invest little in technology, lack quality raw materials, and many small-scale production stages are not specialized.

According to the latest survey data of the Hanoi Center for Industrial Promotion and Development Consulting, on average, each year Hanoi's rattan and bamboo weaving villages consume about 6,800 tons of raw materials of all kinds (rattan, bamboo, reed, rattan, reed, bamboo, etc.).

On average, a business consumes about 50 tons of raw materials/month, and a household consumes about 20 tons of raw materials/month.

Ceramic villages consume about 620,000 tons of raw materials, mainly clay and kaolin; lacquer villages need about 4,000 tons; wood villages need about 1,000,000 m3 of wood.

At the conference connecting supply and demand of input materials for the handicraft industry between Hanoi enterprises and provinces and cities in the Northern region, delegates introduced the potential, strengths, needs, and connection of input materials; and sought partners to supply raw materials, process semi-finished products, and finished products stably, long-term, and with quality.

Within the framework of the conference, Hanoi and the northern provinces signed a cooperation agreement, connecting supply and demand of input materials for the handicraft industry.

Hanoi is the leading locality in the country with 1,350 craft villages. By the end of 2024, 327 traditional craft villages had been recognized by the City People's Committee, with 47/52 occupations in the total number of traditional occupations in the country. Craft villages have been actively contributing to economic restructuring, rural economic development, job creation, and successful implementation of the new rural construction program.
