Encroachment on sidewalks obstructs traffic, endangers pedestrians and reduces urban beauty. The image of a civilized, modern city is difficult to complete if, right on the central streets, residents and tourists still encounter sidewalks divided by stalls, billboards, and makeshift shelters.
Notably, many cases of sidewalk encroachment are related to the need to make a living. Street vendors and small shops that have existed for a long time, when removed or relocated, often give rise to resentment. Therefore, urban management and beautification work requires determination, but also flexibility, balancing the need to maintain discipline and ensure livelihoods.
To move towards a civilized and modern urban image, the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province has just issued Directive No. 09/CT-UBND on strengthening the management and improvement of sidewalks and roads, ensuring order and urban beauty.
The directive requires relevant sectors and units to review and update detailed planning of urban areas, prioritizing renovations on existing roads. At the same time, strengthen inspection and strictly handle acts of encroachment on sidewalks and roads, especially at "hot spots" such as: Thai Nguyen Central Hospital Gate, Hospital A Gate, Thai Market, Doi Can Street...
However, along with the involvement of the authorities, the decisive factor still lies in community awareness. Sidewalks are public spaces, for pedestrians and common social activities. When each business household and each citizen knows how to give up the sidewalk for its proper function and maintain public hygiene, the face of the city will change in a positive direction. On the contrary, just a few cases of "breaking the rules" are enough to create a bad precedent, leading to consequences for traffic and aesthetics.
Experience from many cities shows that when the government is resolute but at the same time has appropriate support solutions, people are willing to agree. For example, arranging concentrated trading areas instead of occupying sidewalks, creating conditions for small businesses; or encouraging advertising according to regulations instead of messy signs. It is this harmony that helps the "sidewalk problem" to be solved sustainably.
It can be said that sidewalk beautification is a practical action to build a safe, civilized and modern living environment. Each open sidewalk is a step forward on the journey to make Thai Nguyen a livable city.
Starting with small things like keeping the sidewalks neat and clean, not encroaching on corridors, each citizen is contributing to creating a spacious and friendly urban appearance. When the community joins hands, the "face" of the city will certainly become brighter and more civilized.
