The Temple of Literature - National University is not only a valuable asset of the capital and of Vietnam, but it has also become a cultural heritage of humanity. Over the years, the Temple of Literature - National University, a spiritual site and symbol of intellect and the tradition of learning, has become an attractive cultural tourist destination, making significant contributions to the all-round development of the capital and the entire country.
The Temple of Literature - National University complex is located south of the ancient Thang Long citadel. The Temple of Literature - National University has been recognized as a Special National Monument by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 548/QD-TTg dated May 12, 2012. The Khue Van Pavilion at the Temple of Literature - National University has been chosen as a symbol of the capital city according to the Law on the Capital City, and the 82 doctoral steles at the Temple of Literature - National University have been recognized by UNESCO as documentary heritage and inscribed on the Memory of the World list . These achievements demonstrate that the Temple of Literature - National University is not only a valuable asset of the capital city and Vietnam, but has also become a cultural heritage of humanity. Over the years, the Temple of Literature - National University, a spiritual site and symbol of intellect and the tradition of learning, has received special attention from all levels of government, creating favorable conditions for it to become an attractive destination for domestic and international tourists.
The Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam architectural complex includes: Van Lake, the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam area, and Giam Garden, with the main architectural features being Van Mieu - a temple dedicated to Confucius, and Quoc Tu Giam - Vietnam's first university.
The Temple of Literature - National University complex is surrounded by a brick wall, divided into five layers of space with different architectural styles. Each layer is enclosed by brick walls with three connecting gates (a central gate and two side gates). From the outside in, the gates are: the Temple of Literature Gate, the Great Central Gate, the Great Achievement Gate, and the Imperial Academy Gate. With over 700 years of operation, having trained thousands of talented individuals for the country, the Temple of Literature - National University is now a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors, a place to honor outstanding students, and a venue for the annual poetry festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, as well as a place for many cultural and scientific exchanges. It is also here, during the Lunar New Year or before exams, that students often come to ask for auspicious calligraphy from calligraphers to pray for good luck in their studies and exams.
Currently, the Temple of Literature - National University is an attractive cultural tourist destination, making significant contributions to the all-round development of the capital city and the entire country. Since 1962, the site has been classified as a national monument by the Ministry of Culture and is now a Special National Monument, with 82 steles recognized by UNESCO as World Documentary Heritage. The site has always received special attention from the City, which organizes its management, protection, and promotion of its value. In 1988, the City established the Center for Cultural and Scientific Research of the Temple of Literature - National University and assigned it the task of directly and comprehensively managing the site. Currently, the main architectural elements within the site have been restored and reconstructed to serve the needs of preservation, promotion of its value, and tourism development in the capital city and the entire country.
