The benchmark for this year's high school graduation exam in many majors is very high, nearly 10 points per subject still failed - Photo: TRUNG TAN
Considering the high school graduation exam score method, in 2024, there will be 8 majors in universities with a standard score of 29 points or more, no major with 30 points. Many years ago, there were majors with absolute standard scores, but in the past few years, this score has not been achieved. However, this year, those standard score records have been broken.
National valedictorian also failed
There are still some major universities that have not announced their benchmark scores, but statistics from Tuoi Tre Online show that there are more than 20 majors in universities with benchmark scores of 29 or higher, of which 6 majors have achieved the absolute score of 30. These statistics only consider the 2025 high school graduation exam score method.
Among the 6 majors with a standard score of 30, candidates without priority points must score 10 points per subject to be admitted, including 4 pedagogical majors. Coincidentally, the absolute standard score is in two schools and the same two majors: English pedagogy and Chinese pedagogy.

Both of these universities are foreign language training schools, not teacher training schools.
With this benchmark score, even the top student of block D1 nationwide this year with a score of 29, if not having priority points for admission to these schools, will fail the first choice.
The majority of majors with a benchmark score of 29 or higher are pedagogy and artificial intelligence. Notably, not only large pedagogical schools, but even a provincial school such as An Giang University (Ho Chi Minh City National University) also has 2 majors with a benchmark score of over 29. Ho Chi Minh City University of Education also has 2 pedagogical majors with a benchmark score of over 29.
The English Pedagogy Department at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education also set a record for the standard score of this school when it reached 29.57 points. Thus, without the priority points, a candidate with 9.58 points per subject would still fail.
Benchmark scores rise in the South
Not only in the field of education but also in the field of information technology, the trend of high benchmark scores this year is clearly skewed towards schools in the Southern region. If in previous years the field of education and information technology in the Northern region tended to be higher than in the South, this year it is the opposite.
Unlike previous years, this year the benchmark scores of many northern universities of technology and engineering are not too high, even lower than many southern universities.
The two hot majors of Hanoi University of Science and Technology are artificial intelligence and computer science with the highest benchmark scores in the North this year, with 29.38 and 29.19, respectively. And these are also the two technical majors in the North with benchmark scores above 29.
Meanwhile, in the South, these majors at the University of Information Technology and Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) are still incredibly high.
In the field of computer science at the University of Natural Sciences, all combinations have a standard score of 29.56 or higher. The combination of math - physics - chemistry has a standard score of up to 29.92. Thus, without priority points, candidates with 9.97 points per subject - an almost absolute score - still fail their first choice.
Slightly lower, but the artificial intelligence major of the University of Information Technology also reached 29.6 points - an unprecedented high standard score at this university.
In addition to the majors with benchmark scores of 29 and above, the number of majors with benchmark scores from 28.5 to under 29 is countless. It can be said that this year's university benchmark scores are contrary to the high school graduation exam scores - which have decreased sharply compared to 2024.
This year, only the medical school block has a sharp decrease in admission scores compared to last year. This reflects quite accurately the correlation between exam scores and the number of candidates taking the math-chemistry-biology combination exam in 2025.
