Lu village school before the opening day

Việt NamViệt Nam29/08/2023

In mid-August, teachers from the Lu village kindergarten (Anh Hong kindergarten), Liep Te commune, Thuan Chau district, returned to their remote classrooms to prepare for the new school year. The roads are difficult, the classroom facilities are not really guaranteed..., but with their love for the profession and children, the teachers have attached themselves and devoted their youth, sticking with the class to "sow letters" in this remote village along the Da River.

We went to the Lu village school with the kindergarten teachers. The morning rain made the nearly 2km-long dirt road from the village entrance to the school slippery and difficult to navigate. Some parents came down to pick us up to help the teachers overcome some difficult sections of the road.

Teacher Quàng Thị Ngọc shared: A month ago, the steep road leading to the school was just a very small path for motorbikes to go up, if the steering wheel swerved, they would fall. During the last summer vacation, the villagers and teachers of the kindergarten and primary school filled the ground and leveled the road, so this time it was easier to travel.

The Lu village kindergarten is located in the same area as the primary school (Liep Te Primary and Secondary School). From early morning, parents were present with the teachers to clean and rearrange the tables and chairs to welcome the new school year. Mr. Luong Van Tuan said: The teachers do not mind the difficulties, staying at the school to teach the children in the village, so every year, before entering the new school year, parents whose children study at the school gather to support the teachers to clean and rearrange the classrooms.

Lu Village Kindergarten currently has 2 classrooms, built since 2012 under the Son La Hydropower Resettlement Area Project. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school has 58 children in the younger kindergarten class and a combined middle-old kindergarten class, with 2 teachers in charge (compared to the norm, there is still a shortage of 1 teacher/class). To welcome the new school year, in addition to preparing facilities, teachers have visited each family to encourage parents to bring their children to class at the right age, ensuring that they have all the necessary documents for their children to enter the younger kindergarten class. At the same time, they design and decorate the classroom, and prepare illustrative materials for teaching.

As a school in a remote village, the people are mainly Thai and La Ha ethnic groups. Although the State has invested in building the school, it still faces many difficulties. In 2016, due to the impact of floods and weak terrain, the school is close to the Da River bank, so 148m of the surrounding wall collapsed. To ensure the safety of children, the Vietnam Insurance Trade Union supported 119 million VND to rebuild the surrounding wall.

However, the classroom walls are now in disrepair, rainwater seeps into the walls, the window panes are broken, and the welds on the iron bars of the windows are broken. Because the facilities do not meet the requirements for cooking meals for preschool children, families proactively prepare lunch for their children to bring to class. The school has not yet invested in building a public house, so after school hours, teachers use the students' classrooms as a place to live, work, and cook... which is inconvenient for daily activities.

Teachers encourage parents to send their children to school at the right age.

For all 6 years of her career, teacher Lo Thi Toan, a teacher at Anh Hong Kindergarten, has taught at a remote school, of which 3 years she taught at the Lu village school. Ms. Toan said: My house is in Chieng Ly commune, more than 50km from the school, so I only go home on weekends. Every time I go to school, I prepare enough rice and food to last a week. At the remote school, there are still many difficulties, but being able to teach children and see them recognize each letter makes me love and be more attached to the job.

Overcoming the hardships and difficulties, the teachers of the Lu village school still work hard to stay in the village and school to "sow knowledge and nurture seeds", with the hope of contributing to bringing a bright future to children in this ethnic minority area with many difficulties.
