Yesterday, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training announced the list of track and field teams participating in the 28th SEA Games. Athlete Nguyen Thi Thuy - one of the key athletes - was left out.

Nguyen Thi Thuy (born in 1991) is one of the talents not only of Hanoi athletics but also of the national team. She has participated in the SEA Games 3 times and achieved positive results. At the 26th SEA Games in 2011, Thuy won a silver medal in the 400m individual event; and at the 27th SEA Games in 2013, Thuy and teammates Quach Thi Lan, Nguyen Thi Huyen, and Nguyen Thi Oanh won a silver medal in the women's 4 x 400m relay. These are also the 4 key athletes that the sports industry invested in and sent to the US for training last year.
The underlying reason for Thuy's loss of position is not entirely in the professional aspect, because at the present time, Thuy is still considered one of the four key players in the women's 4 x 400 m relay event in the national team. Even in the initial preparation plan of the Vietnam Athletics Federation, the above event was set as a target to win the 28th SEA Games gold medal and Thuy is considered one of the most experienced athletes of Vietnam in this event.
However, during the training session in the US in 2014, she did not please the head of the delegation, Duong Duc Thuy - Head of the Department of Athletics and Sports when she frankly expressed her dissatisfaction with some of Mr. Thuy's actions (even the leaders of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training had to go there to resolve the issue). Yesterday, Mr. Thuy refused to give an interview to Thanh Nien Newspaper, but when we asked a leader of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, we learned that the Athletics Department explained the reason for eliminating Thuy was because they thought her training awareness was not good.
Ms. Vu Thuy Nga - Thuy's coach in Hanoi said: "Thuy's absence from the team is a huge loss for her. In my opinion, the reason for eliminating Thuy is not satisfactory. If Thuy violated the discipline, she needs to clearly state it in writing to us. I feel very sad and angry that the women's relay event is in great need of an experienced athlete like Thuy, but Thuy was eliminated while her performance was still quite good."
Is it because of personal grudges that Vietnamese athletics has missed out on a talent for the SEA Games gold medal campaign? Have the responsible people of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and the Vietnam Athletics Federation conducted a “confrontation” with the athletes, or have they only heard a one-sided report from the athletics department?
Vu Thi Huong wants to retire from racing A few days ago, there was news that the barefoot queen Pham Thi would attend the 28th SEA Games. However, Binh confirmed to us that after winning the gold medal at the Games, she would officially retire. Therefore, her name was not on the list of participants this time. Another notable point of this list is that it still includes Vu Thi Huong - the short-distance queen of Vietnamese athletics, but a few days ago, Huong also shared with us that she decided to retire from the track after returning from the Southeast Asian University Games at the end of 2014. |
