Along with the iPhone 17 series, Apple has just introduced a new charger. With the somewhat confusing name of "40W up to 60W dynamic power adapter", this is one of the first chargers on the market to support the USB PD 3.2 AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) standard.

However, Apple is not the first to use this charging technology. Previously, Google launched the Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W USB-C charger with similar features, according to information from The Verge .

The AVS standard allows for more flexible and stable voltage delivery than previous standards. Instead of being fixed at a few voltage levels, the charger can adjust precisely to the needs of the device. This allows for faster, more efficient charging and limits heat generation, while maintaining battery life for phones and laptops.

In reality, smartphone and laptop batteries do not charge at full capacity throughout the entire charging process. As capacity increases, the charging speed slows down to ensure safety and prevent overheating. With AVS, the power supply can “fine-tune” the voltage closer to the ideal level, improving charging speed at critical stages.

However, Apple's new charger cannot maintain a continuous 60W capacity. According to a test by a user on reddit named UsbCHardware, the product only maintained this level for about 18 minutes, then dropped to the 40W threshold.

That means Apple’s compact GaN charger is more suitable for the iPhone 17 than the MacBook Pro, which is why Apple labels the product as a 40W charger “with a maximum power of 60W,” rather than promoting it as a full 60W charger.

Testing from the user community also shows that the charger can meet the needs of other devices, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 when activating TV-out mode, which requires 60W power. However, there is no clear information about the stability level when used for a long time.
