Phone number identification will limit impersonation and fraud

Công LuậnCông Luận07/11/2023

Since October 27, the Ministry of Information and Communications ( MIC ) has implemented call identification of agencies, units under the ministry, and telecommunications carriers. All calls to citizens from units under the MIC will display the identifier "BO TTTT," and calls from telecommunications businesses will also display the identifier of the carrier. This is an important step forward in limiting impersonation and fraud calls.

At a press conference held in November 2023, a representative of the Ministry of Information and Communications said that call identification has received positive support from the public and the press. However, an important point is that this requires consensus and uniform implementation from all agencies, units, and businesses. Currently, fraudulent and impersonation calls come in many forms, from impersonating state agencies, credit institutions to e-commerce businesses offering "easy work with high salaries." If all phone numbers are identified, this situation will be significantly reduced.

People are increasingly faced with fake calls from entities claiming to be the Ministry of Information and Communications, the police, the prosecutor's office, banks, and telecommunications networks. The purpose of these entities is often to collect information to scare, defraud, and then appropriate people's property. This phenomenon causes public outrage and affects the activities of many agencies, organizations, and individuals.

Another aspect of the cybersecurity and fraud issue is junk SIMs. According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, about 1.5 million SIMs are released to the market every month, and the situation of junk SIMs has consequences for society. Faced with this situation, network operators have committed to stopping the development of SIMs from agents and focusing on developing their own distribution channels, along with reputable chain channels.

Every week, the Information Security Department receives about 300 reports of online fraud. Common cases are impersonating banks, competent authorities, and e-commerce platforms. This places an importance on protecting the safety of personal information and assets.

So identifying phone numbers is an important step in reducing scams and impersonation calls. This requires consensus and implementation from all stakeholders, from government agencies to businesses and carriers. We need to work together to create a safer online environment and protect people's personal information.
