Tan Son District Medical Center (Phu Tho Province) has just performed an intervention to remove a foreign object from the esophagus, a U-shaped iron nail, from an 8-year-old patient. The patient came to the clinic with a burning pain in the neck, sore throat, and difficulty swallowing, suspected to be due to swallowing a foreign object.
Taking an X-ray, the doctor determined that the foreign object was a U-shaped iron nail, the longest side 2 cm, sharp tip, located at the upper 1/3 of the esophagus.

Doctor Cao Tien Dung, Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Tan Son District Medical Center ( Phu Tho ), said that this is a very dangerous case of foreign body aspiration in the esophagus, because the foreign body has sharp, angular shapes that can puncture the esophagus, cause mediastinal emphysema... endangering life if not operated on promptly.
After consultation, the doctors removed the foreign object using an esophagoscopy using a flexible tube under anesthesia. More than 30 minutes later, the foreign object was successfully removed, ensuring the safety of the child's life.
Doctors recommend that when children have symptoms such as: sore throat, sudden coughing, or suspected choking on a foreign object, they should go to the nearest medical facility for timely examination.
