Although the authorities have confirmed that the information about fake eggs spreading on social networks recently is fabricated, the egg consumption market has been seriously affected, the price of eggs has dropped rapidly, causing many businesses and livestock farmers to suffer heavy losses.

Egg prices plummet after false rumors

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the selling price of domestic poultry eggs has been continuously decreasing. According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the selling price of chicken eggs at farms in the province from the end of 2024 will be only about 1,500 VND/egg, lower than the production cost. However, recently, information about fake chicken eggs spreading on social networks has continued to push the price of chicken eggs down to only about 1,200 VND/egg, causing farms to fall into losses.

Mr. Vu Manh Hung - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hung Nhon Group affirmed: "This is completely fake news, there is no technology to make fake eggs". According to Mr. Hung, a real egg is currently sold for just over 1,000 VND/egg, making fake eggs to compete with such cheap products is unreasonable and uneconomical .

In fact, these kinds of false rumors are not new for many years. Misinformation not only confuses consumers but also causes direct damage to farmers. In recent days, the price of industrial chicken eggs at the farm has dropped from 1,400 VND to 1,200 VND/egg.

Hung Nhon Group currently operates 8 egg-laying farms on an area of 7 hectares, supplying about 130 million eggs per year. Recently, Hung Nhon and its partners have completed and put into operation the DHN Tay Ninh high-tech livestock area with the goal of producing 20 million eggs per year.

According to some egg-laying chicken farmers in Suoi Day commune, Tan Chau district, from before the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025 until now, egg prices have been low, now information about fake eggs spreading on social networks has made the selling price at the farm even lower, currently selling at only 1,300-1,400 VND/egg. This price is not enough to cover production costs, let alone make a profit. If this situation continues, many farms will probably destroy their flocks.

Many chicken farms are in trouble because the selling price of eggs is lower than the cost price.

Professional agencies refute false information

Regarding the information about fake eggs spreading on social networks, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Loan - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said that for over a year, the price of poultry eggs has continuously recorded a downward trend, especially since the beginning of the year, the selling price of industrial chicken eggs at farms is only about 1,600 VND/egg, now there is more information about fake eggs, making it more and more difficult for farmers.

According to Ms. Loan, to ensure livestock farming in the area, recently, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has regularly inspected livestock farming conditions at farms, ensuring that barns meet biosafety standards, have hygienic waste treatment systems, and comply with safe distances from residential areas.

Tay Ninh livestock industry has applied many livestock farming processes to ensure biosafety.

The source of breeding stock and animal feed is also strictly controlled, no antibiotics or banned substances are used during the rearing process. Vaccination campaigns are carried out in accordance with regulations, focusing on preventing dangerous diseases such as bird flu and Newcastle.

In particular, poultry egg products from farms are periodically tested to detect veterinary drug residues or harmful bacteria, and a traceability system is applied to help consumers feel secure in their choices.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD), by the end of the first quarter of 2025, Tay Ninh province had a total poultry herd of about 10.2 million birds, including 87 chicken farms with 8.1 million birds. There were 7 commercial egg-laying farms with 2.8 million birds, producing about 683 million eggs per year, equivalent to nearly 1.87 million eggs per day.

Faced with a wave of false information spreading on social networks about “fake chicken eggs”, public confusion, consumers turning away, and plummeting egg prices, on May 23, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment sent a dispatch requesting the Ministry of Public Security to investigate, verify, clarify motives, purposes, and strictly handle those who spread false information about fake chicken eggs.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (left cover) inspects the chicken egg production line at QL Vietnam Agroresources Company Limited.

According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien, up to now, there is no scientific evidence in the world that it is possible to produce artificial chicken eggs with the same characteristics as natural chicken eggs. In fact, in Vietnam, up to now, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has not discovered, nor has any competent agency reported on the discovery of fake chicken eggs circulating on the market. Thus, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment can confirm that the information spread on social networks about the production of fake chicken eggs in the country is completely fabricated, not only causing confusion and anxiety for domestic consumers but also causing great damage to the livestock industry.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2024, Vietnam's poultry egg output will reach 20.35 billion eggs, an increase of 6.3% compared to 2023; in 2025, the livestock industry plans to reach 21 billion eggs (an increase of about 4%). Production results in the first 4 months of 2025, egg output is estimated to reach nearly 7 billion eggs, an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period in 2024.

Eggs are mainly produced for the domestic market (only about 1% of eggs are exported). Therefore, with the current production capacity, the domestic egg supply is abundant and there is a surplus. That is the reason why the purchase price of eggs at the farm since after Tet is lower than the production cost. Many poultry farms are suffering losses as the purchase price of eggs at the farms is currently low. The price of chicken eggs at the farm has currently dropped below 1,400 VND/egg and there are no signs of recovery.
