Soaring fuel prices due to the Middle East conflict are prompting consumers to switch to vehicles with lower running costs.

Previously, electric vehicle sales had been trending downward in many markets due to cuts in incentive programs. But the energy crisis has made electric vehicles more attractive to consumers.

According to data from S&P Global Mobility, among the 150 countries for which data is available, 28 countries, including Australia and the UK, recorded record-high monthly electric vehicle sales in March.

Nine countries, including Brazil and the Philippines, saw record sales in April. Southeast Asia saw sales increase by 40% to 90,000 units, with electric vehicles accounting for 16% of the region's automotive market share.

In a report published on May 20, the International Energy Agency (IEA) stated that how countries respond to the current energy crisis “could shape the global automotive market for years to come.”

The 1970s oil crisis diminished the appeal of large, fuel-guzzling vehicles, creating an opportunity for smaller, fuel-efficient Japanese cars to enter the global market. Similarly, the current conflict in Iran could become a catalyst for electric vehicles, even after tensions ease, if more consumers switch to them and recognize their practical benefits.

Currently, the trend towards electric vehicles is also creating more opportunities for Chinese automakers to expand their presence in the global market. According to a Chinese automotive industry association, the country's car exports in April increased by 70%, reaching 900,000 vehicles. Of these, exports of new energy vehicles – including electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles – more than doubled to 430,000 vehicles, accounting for nearly half of the total car exports.

According to the IEA, by 2025, 55% of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sold in markets outside the US, Europe, and China will be imported from China. In Southeast Asia – a region heavily reliant on Middle Eastern crude oil – competitively priced Chinese electric vehicles have begun to put pressure on Japanese automakers, who have long dominated the region.
