Digital age readers

Smartphones and the race for digital technology have fundamentally changed readers' habits and how they access information.

Recalling his student days over 20 years ago, Mr. Tran Van Bao (Buon Ma Thuot City) said that he might skip breakfast, but he absolutely had to buy a newspaper. He and his friends would eagerly pass around and read newspapers like Tuoi Tre, The Thao , and Thanh Nien. Since using smartphones, he has gradually replaced reading print newspapers with browsing online news. When busy and unable to look at the screen for long periods, he uses the text-to-speech feature. This has made accessing information much easier.

Faced with the almost endless data available in online newspapers and cyberspace, people like Mr. Bao have gradually shifted from flipping through newspaper pages to swiping and tapping on smartphones. In recent years, news organizations have also invested heavily in online newspaper interfaces to retain readers through the swiping and tapping experience and attractive presentation. Alongside the increasingly faster news production speed, many news organizations are also integrating multimedia, making the reading experience more intuitive.

Mr. Doan Van Han (Krong Pac district) admitted that although he maintains the habit of reading newspapers every morning, he still accesses many journalistic products through social media accounts. According to him, media outlets "marketing" to readers through social media is an effective solution, increasing readership, expanding reach, and helping readers easily access official, verified, and censored information, avoiding the "trap" of fake news and misinformation.

Faced with the enormous amount of information constantly being produced in the digital space every day and every hour, each reader has their own "taste" based on age, gender, interests, occupation, etc. Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh (Buon Ma Thuot City) said that while she likes to read feature articles on life, education, travel, and sharing about marriage and family, her husband prefers to read current events, politics , and sports news; and her daughter likes to read analyses and comments following youth trends. Each person has their own phone, and based on their habits of accessing and selecting information, the algorithms of social media applications, Google Chrome, etc., prioritize displaying increasingly personalized information, making it easier for readers to access.

Multidirectional interaction between media outlets and readers, experts, or government agencies is also a factor in attracting and retaining readers. According to Mr. Doan Van Han, some newspapers have effectively utilized the reader comments below each news article. These comments serve as a forum for readers to express their opinions and perspectives on the topics covered; they suggest good ideas and new topics that the newspaper's editorial team can further explore in a way that resonates with the majority of readers. Furthermore, some newspapers have organized online forums, online consultations, or created sections using articles by experts. As a result, readers' questions about policy or social issues and phenomena are analyzed, conveyed, and explained from diverse, easily understandable, and relatable perspectives. And so, readers turn to newspapers not only to access information but also to learn, research, and find solutions to issues that concern them.
