Unique in Da Nang: Rewarding outstanding students with Ngoc Linh ginseng.

On the morning of May 29th, amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the closing ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year, Tra Nam Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School (Tra Linh commune, Da Nang city) surprised many by awarding outstanding students with seedlings of Ngoc Linh ginseng – a precious medicinal herb considered a "national treasure" of the mountainous region of Da Nang.

51 students who achieved excellent and outstanding academic results at Tra Nam Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School each received 5 Ngoc Linh ginseng seedlings.

Instead of the usual gifts like notebooks or school supplies, this year 51 students who achieved excellent or outstanding academic results at the school each received 5 seedlings of Ngoc Linh ginseng. A total of 255 ginseng seedlings were handed out to the students, much to the joy and excitement of their parents and teachers.

For many students here, this special award is not only a gift recognizing their academic achievements but also a "treasure" carrying the hope of a more stable future for their families.

According to Mr. Vo Dang Chin, the school principal, this school year has 338 students across two levels, including 201 primary school students and 137 secondary school students. After a year of diligent study, 51 students in the school achieved the title of excellent or outstanding student.

According to Mr. Chín, the idea of awarding prizes with Ngọc Linh ginseng was conceived by the school at the beginning of the school year with the desire to create motivation for learning in a way that is more relevant to the lives of students in mountainous areas.

"In previous years, the school awarded prizes in a traditional way. This year, we want the students to not only be happy to receive praise but also to have more opportunities to create long-term livelihoods for their families," Mr. Chinh shared.

Giving Ngoc Linh ginseng seedlings to students is a way to motivate them to study in a way that is more relevant to the lives of students in mountainous areas.

To ensure a sufficient supply of seedlings for the awards, the school allocated a portion of its reward and recognition fund, while also soliciting additional donations from local ginseng growers and teachers.

Many parents believe this reward is more practical than typical material gifts. Given the difficult economic conditions of people in mountainous areas, a few ginseng seedlings, if well cared for, could become a significant source of income in the future.
