We arrived at Cua Viet Secondary and High School just as the students were sorting plastic waste to sell. With the money earned, the Youth Union bought national flags to donate to fishermen. Located in a coastal commune, Cua Viet Secondary and High School always has many activities focused on the sea and islands, such as cleaning beaches and collecting plastic waste. Through these activities, the students came up with the idea of collecting plastic waste to sell and use the money to buy national flags for fishermen. From that, the "Exchange Plastic Waste for National Flags" model was born.

As scheduled, every Friday afternoon, the school's Youth Union organizes the collection of plastic waste, beer cans, and scrap paper, which are then taken to recycling centers for sale. To date, the Youth Union has purchased and donated hundreds of national flags to fishermen in the coastal areas of the commune.

“The ‘Exchange Plastic Waste for National Flags’ model has been maintained by the Youth Union for many years. When launched, the students enthusiastically participated. Besides cleaning up the environment, this is also a meaningful activity for the students,” shared teacher Ho Viet My, Secretary of the Youth Union of Cua Viet Secondary and High School.

Based on this model, a group of students from the school implemented the project "Exchanging plastic waste for the national flag" and won second prize at the provincial science and technology competition in the 2024-2025 school year.

Although these actions may not be grand, the students have contributed their small efforts to protecting a green, clean, and beautiful environment. The image of them carefully presenting brand-new national flags to fishermen in the coastal region not only demonstrates their love for their homeland but also shows the increasing awareness and responsibility of students towards their living environment.

Mr. Le Van Hien from Xuan Ngoc village, Cua Viet commune, said: "After spending long days at sea fishing, seeing the national flag flying atop the boat makes me even more proud. I especially appreciate the dedication of the students who have done this meaningful work alongside us in protecting the sea and islands."

Through specific and practical environmental protection activities, students from Cua Viet Secondary and High School have conveyed a message about protecting the marine environment and building an environmentally friendly coastal community.

Mr. Trinh Van Mui, Secretary of the Youth Union of Cua Viet Commune, further shared: “Cua Viet Secondary and High School is the only school in the commune that has practical activities contributing to preserving and protecting the marine environment. With the model "Exchange plastic waste for national flags," we will have a plan to promote and replicate it in other schools in the area.”

There are many ways to create meaningful things from plastic waste. Selling plastic waste to buy national flags is not only a way to keep the environment clean and beautiful, but also a lesson in green living, responsibility towards nature and the homeland. Each national flag given to fishermen by the students is also a way to express patriotism and pride, thereby contributing to protecting the beloved sea and islands of the Fatherland.
