Located between the Tien and Hau rivers, Phu Tan is one of the four island districts of An Giang province, established by the An Giang Provincial Party Committee in December 1968. This was during a time when the area was still under enemy occupation, and the number of cadres and party members was small and scattered. The tradition of patriotism and the aspiration for peace remained strong, fostering unity and contributing to the success of the national, democratic, and people's revolution – the complete liberation of Phu Tan on May 3, 1975.

On July 4, 1977, the First District Party Congress identified the key focus: “To transform the movement in the district to be vibrant, continuous, and on an increasingly large and comprehensive scale, based on concentrating on production, primarily agriculture , while simultaneously carrying out three revolutions: the revolution in production relations, the scientific and technological revolution, and the cultural and ideological revolution, with the scientific and technological revolution being the key…”. This concise direction remains relevant to this day.

Since 2019, Phu Tan district has been a leader in implementing the "2 years, 5 crops" production model. This is an effective solution for land recycling, reducing environmental pollution, and promoting sustainable agricultural production. The alluvial terrain makes the land fertile, developing its agricultural strengths, and has long been famous for its fields of delicious fragrant sticky rice. From the "3 reductions, 3 increases" production model to the "1 must, 5 reductions" model, the district continues to actively implement the sustainable development project of 1 million hectares of high-quality specialized rice cultivation.

Entering a new phase, the Party Committee, government, and people of Phu Tan district are promoting dynamism and creativity, exploiting existing potential and advantages. According to the Chairwoman of the Phu Tan District People's Committee, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh, the district has achieved the standards of 9 new rural communes, 2 advanced new rural communes, and 2 civilized urban towns. The average per capita income has reached 71.6 million VND/person/year. Besides rice and sticky rice, some areas have switched to growing high - value fruit trees; cash crops and aquaculture are under contract farming. Currently, 11 products have achieved 3-star OCOP (One Commune One Product) standards; traditional craft villages maintain production and stabilize livelihoods for the people.

Despite its many advantages, the biggest challenge for this island district is its isolated location, separated from other districts by numerous canals and waterways. Over the years, the motto "The State and the People work together" has been highly promoted by the Party Committee, government, and people, focusing their efforts and resources on building new rural areas. Wooden bridges, temporary bridges, and narrow rural roads have been gradually replaced by concrete bridges and wide asphalt roads, connecting hamlets and communes seamlessly; streetlights and greenery have reached even the most remote areas once known as "the land of monkeys and birds."

Mr. Le Trung Anh (Phu My town) shared: “I was born and raised in this hometown, witnessing the changes every day, and I feel very proud. Now, both the town center and the remote areas have a green, clean, and beautiful appearance, and the lives of the people are improving day by day.” Le Bao Khanh (a student in class 12A4, Chu Van An High School) expressed: “During the month of April, participating in traditional activities to learn about the history of the country and the province, including our hometown of Phu Tan, we cherish the values left by our ancestors; we are determined to study and train ourselves to contribute to building our hometown into an increasingly modern, prosperous, and beautiful place.”

In gratitude to previous generations, Phu Tan district has effectively implemented the "Paying Gratitude" program, caring for policy beneficiary families and those who have rendered meritorious services; prioritizing housing support, poverty alleviation, production assistance, and fully implementing policies as prescribed. Specifically, preferential policies under the Ordinance on People with Meritorious Services to the Revolution have been disbursed to 3,564 individuals; regular and extraordinary allowances have been disbursed to an average of over 97,000 beneficiaries per year, with a total budget of over 290 billion VND (an average of 58 billion VND per year). The entire district has more than 1,900 households with meritorious services to the revolution. To date, 100% of the housing support target for 42 households of people with meritorious services to the revolution has been achieved.

“Though things have changed, Phu Tan today still carries a wealth of gratitude.” This line from the famous song “The Gratitude of Phu Tan” by composer Le Minh retains its original meaning over the years, reflecting the love for the land and people of this island. On important occasions, leaders of the district throughout history have always conveyed such profound and heartfelt words of gratitude to future generations. Phu Tan district has overcome countless hardships and sacrifices of many generations; the careful building efforts of our forefathers; and the preservation and nurturing efforts of the entire Party, army, and people. Today's generation, from leaders and managers to every cadre, Party member, and citizen, both cherishes and takes pride in this land, while also accepting the responsibility to continue building this island into an even more prosperous and beautiful place.
