On March 29, Malaysian police said they had arrested an Israeli man carrying six guns at a hotel in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. This man is suspected of being an Israeli spy.
Speaking to reporters, Malaysian Police Inspector General Razarudin Husain said the 36-year-old suspect is believed to have traveled from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Malaysia using a fake French passport on March 12.
During the arrest, police found that the man was carrying six handguns, three of which were loaded, and 200 rounds of ammunition. He surrendered his Israeli passport when questioned by police. Police are investigating the possibility that he is an Israeli intelligence officer.
Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country, has maintained support for the Palestinians and has criticized Israel's actions in the Gaza conflict.
In 2018, a Palestinian scientist was shot dead by two unidentified men in the Malaysian capital in a case that the Islamist Hamas movement blamed on Israel's Mossad intelligence agency. Israel denied the accusations at the time.
