Vietnam women's team gathers: Huynh Nhu absent, unexpected replacement revealed

Striker Huynh Nhu and the HCMC women's players were not present at the May gathering to prepare for the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers of the Vietnam women's team.

Why no Huynh Nhu?

The Vietnamese women's team will gather at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center on May 6 to prepare for important international missions in 2025, including the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers, the 2025 AFF Cup and the 33rd SEA Games. Notably, the list that coach Mai Duc Chung just announced does not include striker Huynh Nhu and members of the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club.

The HCMC women's team is training to prepare for the match against Wuhan Jiangda in the semi-finals of the Asian Cup 1. Therefore, the HCMC women's team will not compete for the national team in this training session, but will focus on the club. Huynh Nhu, Chuong Thi Kieu... are the absent names.

Coach Mai Duc Chung has a plan to replace Huynh Nhu, when giving the opportunity to young talent Ngoc Minh Chuyen. The "precious gem" of the Thai Nguyen T&T team won the top scorer title of the U.19 East Asia 2023 and played outstandingly in youth tournaments. Stepping up to the Thai Nguyen T&T first team, Minh Chuyen continued to play aggressively and stand out alongside the seniors Bich Thuy and Tran Thi Thu, contributing to helping the home team finish third in the 2024 National Championship and second in the 2025 National Cup.

Of the four strikers that Mr. Chung trusts, Pham Hai Yen and Vu Thi Hoa both come from the Hanoi women's team and have international experience, while Ta Thi Thuy came from the Ha Nam youth team. Unfortunately, although young striker Luu Hoang Van played well, it was not enough to convince coach Mai Duc Chung. Midfielder Tran Thi Hai Linh has recovered from her injury and has been called up by coach Mai Duc Chung, however, due to many problems, the player born in 2001 missed this training session.

Vietnam women's team plays friendly match against Werder Bremen women

Under the leadership of coach Mai Duc Chung, the list of 25 players from the localities has been sent to the Department of Sports and Physical Training for decision.

Coach Mai Duc Chung will continue to be assisted by experienced coaches such as Doan Minh Hai, fitness expert Cedric Sege Christian Roger and two young assistants, former national players Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh and Dang Kieu Trinh.

According to the plan, the players will take roll call on the morning of May 6 and are expected to have their first training session that afternoon at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center with the coaching staff.

Coach Mai Duc Chung and his players have 10 days to prepare for the international friendly match between the Vietnamese women's team and Werder Bremen women's club. This international friendly match is part of the activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany. Previously, on May 12, the national women's players were scheduled to have a friendly match with Ho Chi Minh City women's club, who are currently training in Hanoi.

At the end of phase 1 of the first training session in 2025, the Vietnamese women's team will depart for Japan for training from June 8 to June 18. After this overseas training trip, the Vietnamese women's team will move to Viet Tri ( Phu Tho ) to continue training and compete in the 2026 Asian Women's Championship qualifiers, with Group E matches taking place here from June 29 to July 5.
