Upon hearing of the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayason expressed his deepest condolences and emphasized that comrade Nguyen Phu Trong left behind close affection and many valuable lessons for him personally as well as for the Lao Party and State.

A very close and devoted friend of the Lao Party, State and people

In an interview with the Vietnamese press stationed in Laos, former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayason said that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was an extremely close and devoted friend of the Party, State and people of Laos and himself. The passing of Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong is an extremely great loss to the Party, State and people of Vietnam.

Former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayason acknowledged that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is the one who brought him invaluable sentiments and lessons as well as the Lao Party and State. In the context of the complicated world situation, together with other leaders, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has given many profound instructions, leading the Communist Party of Vietnam to put forward wise and flexible policies, helping Vietnam overcome all obstacles and increasingly have more strategic friends.

“Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong has led the Vietnamese revolution to develop, step by step firmly entering a new stage, taking advantage of more foreign investment cooperation, improving people's lives, and continuously developing the country,” former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayason assessed.

Regarding the foreign policy imbued with the "Vietnamese bamboo" identity initiated by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Mr. Choummaly said that in the context of the complicated international situation, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has given many profound instructions, together with the leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam, there have been many A very flexible policy in diplomacy, especially on issues related to Vietnam, helps Vietnam overcome challenges, expand foreign relations, establish strategic relations with many countries, thereby gradually developing steadily in the new period. Mr. Choummaly cited that, currently, in the Southeast Asia region, Vietnam has the leading economic growth rate, which helps Vietnam have new position and strength in both economic and political development. Mr. Choummaly Sayason said that what he learned deeply from comrade Nguyen Phu Trong was the direction in Party building work, training cadres, solving negative issues, especially negative phenomena within the Party, especially the resolute handling of violations by a number of leaders, including high-ranking leaders.

“He is an exemplary leader, loyal to the Vietnamese revolutionary cause. In addition, he is also a shining example in both practical actions and in all aspects of work, from giving directions in meetings as well as in issues, making the Vietnamese people increasingly trust and respect him,” former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayason affirmed.

Sharing his memories of working with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayasone said that he had worked with Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong many times during the 2011-2015 period with a close friendship. What impressed him most and what he learned most from Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong was the work of hunger eradication, poverty reduction and new rural development. Mr. Choummaly Sayasone recalled that when he was General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, he and Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong visited Attapeu province, a province with many Vietnamese enterprises investing in the agricultural sector. This helped Attapeu province have a new look and improve the lives of local people.

Regarding the contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the special Vietnam-Laos relationship, former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayasone affirmed that Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong is an exemplary cadre of the Party and State of Vietnam, a leader who is trusted by the people. He has inherited the tradition of the great President Ho Chi Minh, who, together with President Kaysone Phomvihane and President Souphanouvong, laid a solid foundation for the Laos-Vietnam relationship, continuing to develop the special relationship and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam to new heights.
