The greenback fell on Thursday as economic data showed a sharp decline in consumer confidence. The latest data raised concerns about the strength of the U.S. economy and persistent inflation, while sending U.S. Treasury yields sharply lower.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note fell nearly 10 basis points in the previous session and was down 4.2 basis points to 4.256% after falling to 4.249% - its lowest level since December 11, 2024.
In a reverse move, the EUR fell 0.26% to $1.0486.
The greenback has fallen nearly 4% from a more than two-year high hit in January, as concerns about U.S. economic growth and inflation mounted as President Donald Trump prepared to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Investors are also waiting for actions by billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to impact the labor market.
The Canadian dollar fell 0.9% against the greenback to C$1.43, while the Mexican peso gained 0.3% against the dollar to C$20.406.
The market is currently pricing in a 57 basis point cut by the end of the year from the Federal Reserve, with expectations of at least a 25 basis point cut by the June policy meeting.
The US Commerce Department said on February 26 that new home sales fell 10.5% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 657,000 units last month, lower than the 680,000 estimate of economists in a Reuters poll.
Investors are also keeping an eye on any peace talks over Ukraine, which could impact the eurozone economy.
According to Reuters , Ukraine has agreed on the terms of a draft mineral agreement with the United States and could sign it on February 28, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to visit the United States.
Against the Japanese yen, the US dollar fell 0.04% to 148.96, after falling to 148.56 on February 25 - the lowest level since October 11, 2024.
