Long Thanh Airport Project (Dong Nai): All important items meet or exceed schedule

(PLVN) - In mid-June 2025, despite the unpredictable weather in Dong Nai, the construction atmosphere at the Long Thanh airport construction site was still extremely bustling.

Materials and machinery are pouring into the construction site.

A series of key projects are being urgently implemented, most notably the construction of the second runway, one of the crucial items that will be decisive in determining the completion and commercial operation of Long Thanh Airport from the first half of 2026.

Currently, construction materials such as sand, stone, and crushed stone aggregate have been stockpiled along the internal service roads. On the construction site, many engineers, workers, and specialized mechanical equipment such as rollers, bulldozers, graders, and excavators are working at full capacity. Trucks carrying materials are constantly moving in and out, creating a bustling and lively construction scene right in the heart of the large construction site.

Construction on the second runway began on May 30th, running parallel to runway number 1. Currently, construction units are focusing on expanding and completing the service roads for transporting equipment and materials to the correct positions, preparing for the next stages such as treating weak soil foundations, leveling with sand, laying crushed stone, and constructing the taxiway system.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), said that immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony, the consortium of contractors mobilized manpower, equipment, and materials testing laboratories to the site and organized construction without interruption to ensure progress.

Since the beginning of May, the rainy season in Dong Nai has arrived early, with heavy and frequent rainfall, directly affecting all construction activities, especially underground items such as drainage systems, tunnels, and road foundations. Faced with unfavorable weather conditions, construction units have continuously adjusted plans, applied flexible technical solutions to respond promptly, and strengthened measures to ensure labor safety and project quality. The goal is to basically complete the main components by the end of 2025 and put the airport into commercial operation in the first half of 2026.

Currently, the entire construction site is mobilizing more than 13,000 engineers and workers and nearly 3,000 pieces of equipment and machinery, creating a bustling and enthusiastic work scene at the country's largest aviation infrastructure mega-project.

Key projects are accelerating simultaneously.

While the second runway is entering the infrastructure construction phase, other key components of the Long Thanh project are also accelerating, closely following the overall schedule.

Of particular note is package 5.10, the passenger terminal construction. Despite the contract extending to 2026, the consortium of contractors is determined to complete the basic construction by the end of 2025. The underground section and four above-ground floors of the terminal have been completed, reaching 78% of the rough construction volume. The central steel roof structure has been erected to the design height, and roofing is expected to be completed before the official start of the rainy season. The installation of the facade glass, electrical, water, and air conditioning systems is also being implemented simultaneously.

Package 4.6, comprising the first runway and aircraft parking apron, is now largely complete. The runway lighting system has been successfully tested, more than three months ahead of schedule.

Package 4.7, the construction of the aircraft parking apron, is expected to be completed before December 31, 2025, five months ahead of schedule. Package 4.8, the internal port transportation infrastructure, is currently underway with 86 construction teams working simultaneously. Key items such as elevated bridges, tunnels, regulating reservoirs, and auxiliary technical infrastructure systems are being reinforced with increased equipment and personnel, and construction is being organized in three continuous shifts.

Despite facing numerous challenges from unpredictable weather and the enormous scale of construction, work at the Long Thanh project is proceeding with utmost urgency and coordination, shaping its appearance day by day, ready for commercial operation in the first half of 2026, as directed by the Prime Minister .

Along with the main contracts, other component projects have also achieved many positive results. Component project 1, the area for state management agencies such as the Port Authority, Customs, Police, etc., is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025.

In component project 2, the air traffic control building, the air traffic control tower has now reached a height of 107.93m out of a total design height of 115m, and is expected to be completed by the end of September. Auxiliary items such as the technical building, VIP area, power station, etc., are being expedited with equipment installation starting in June to ensure completion within the year.

In the logistics area, component project 4, which includes the cargo terminal, catering area, aircraft maintenance workshop, etc., will be fully completed by 2025.

Notably, ACV has worked directly with foreign partners, shortening the time for supplying technical equipment, air traffic control systems, and terminal operating systems by 5-10 months. According to the plan, all equipment for operation will be delivered to the construction site before December 31, 2025.
