Vocational study abroad trend among Nghe An youth
On June 30, the program "German Career Orientation Bus" held in Vinh city attracted hundreds of students and parents to learn about vocational training programs in Germany and occupations according to German standards right in Vietnam.
The event provided a space for networking, helping young people meet experts, former vocational students and businesses accepting students, and get specific questions answered regarding documents, costs, job opportunities and settlement after graduation.

Tran Thi Minh Khanh, a 12th grade student at Ha Huy Tap High School, shared: “I am interested in nursing in Germany because I love taking care of others and want to study in a professional environment. Through the program, I heard seniors who have studied in Germany share their real-life experiences, which gave me more motivation to learn German and learn more about the study abroad path.”
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, residing in Hung Nguyen Nam commune (formerly the 4 communes of Hung Linh, Long Xa, Thong Tan, Xuan Lam of the old Hung Nguyen district) said: “Previously, my family planned to send my child to college in the country, but after participating in the program, I found that vocational training abroad is more suitable, helping my child to mature early, have a stable income and long-term job opportunities. My family hopes to receive more detailed advice to best prepare for my child.”
According to statistics from the Nghe An Departmentof Education and Training, each year hundreds of students go abroad to study vocational training, mainly in Germany, Japan, South Korea and Canada. Many students choose to go immediately after graduating from high school to save time and money, and quickly access a real working environment. Some young workers also choose this direction to seek settlement opportunities in developed countries.

Germany is currently the destination chosen by many Nghe An youth because of its tuition-free programs, paid salaries during study and clear settlement policies. Popular occupations include nursing, restaurant - hotel, mechanics, construction, agriculture .
During their studies, vocational students in Germany are paid between 800 and 1,100 Euros per month, enough to cover living expenses and save a small amount. After graduation, the salary can be between 2,500 and 3,500 Euros per month, depending on the profession and region, and also opens up the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
Many young people in Nghe An shared that studying a trade in Germany helps them access modern technology, practice discipline, improve their foreign language skills and gain international experience. Many of them have found stable jobs after graduation, financially supporting their families in their hometown.
Japan is also a popular destination for tourism, restaurant - hotel, electronics, nursing. The model of studying Japanese and vocational training, combined with working part-time up to 28 hours/week with a salary of about 750 yen/hour helps students cover living expenses, tuition fees and practice skills, independence. However, the cost of living in Japan is quite high, about 10 million VND/month, with tuition fees from 7 - 11 million VND/month, so the savings are not much. However, many families still prioritize sending their children to study vocational training in Japan so that they can grow up, be independent and soon have a job in a developed country.
South Korea and Canada are also chosen by many young people in Nghe An thanks to their favorable admission policies, high demand for skilled workers and clear settlement opportunities, especially in the fields of engineering, information technology, nursing and mechanics. Vocational study abroad helps young people earn income early, accumulate practical experience, improve foreign languages and professional skills, creating a competitive advantage when applying for jobs at domestic and foreign enterprises.
Barriers to note when studying abroad
Besides the opportunities, vocational study abroad has many potential barriers that students and parents need to consider carefully. The initial cost for a vocational study abroad student is often quite high, including foreign language tuition, application service fees, airfare, insurance, and initial living expenses, ranging from 250 to 400 million VND depending on the center and program.

Language requirements are also a major barrier. To study a trade in Germany, learners need to reach B1 level of German, while Japan requires N5, N4 level of Japanese, forcing learners to spend 6 months - 1 year studying the language before leaving the country. The apprenticeship process requires discipline, independence, and adaptability to a strict working environment.
Culture shock, culinary differences, and climate are not small challenges. Many young people who go to vocational school have difficulty communicating, adapting to life, and balancing living expenses because their part-time income is limited in hours.
In fact, there have been cases of Nghe An students studying abroad in Japan and Korea dropping out of school, working illegally because they could not afford the costs or having their visas refused due to violating the regulations on part-time work. This is a warning lesson for young people who have not prepared financially, psychologically, have foreign language skills and lack accurate information before deciding to go.
To avoid risks, students and parents need to carefully research the roadmap and program through official information channels, contact reputable consulting centers, have transparent costs, and provide clear support during the process of studying and working abroad.

Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training Ho Thi Chau Loan shared: “Vocational study abroad is a practical direction, helping students to quickly access the international environment, have job opportunities and settle down in developed countries. However, to have a successful journey, each young person needs to prepare well in foreign languages, skills, health, and a mindset ready to overcome challenges, turn their dreams of studying and working abroad into reality, contributing to returning to build their homeland or creating a solid career for themselves”.
