On the afternoon of July 24th, hundreds of cars were still lined up for about one kilometer from the ferry terminal to the Phu Long intersection, on Cat Ba Island, Cat Hai District.
From 7 am this morning, the Dong Bai - Cai Vieng ferry service resumed after being temporarily suspended for more than a day to prepare for the storm. Upon hearing the news that the ferry was running, many tourists arrived at the dock as early as 5 am to queue, leading to congestion. Meanwhile, the route from the mainland to the island was relatively smooth.
The management board of the Dong Bai - Cai Vieng ferry terminal said they have mobilized all available capacity, including five large ferries and two smaller ferries, to serve tourists leaving the island.
Due to the impact of the storm, from 12 PM on July 22nd, Hai Phong City suspended inland waterway transport, river ferries, sea ferries, and cable cars. Nearly 4,000 tourists had to stay on Cat Ba Island.
During the time tourists were stranded on the island, Cat Hai district called on hotels and guesthouses to reduce room rates by 50%, and received support. Some hotels even waived the fee or only charged for electricity and water. However, due to the longer-than-expected delay, many people still hoped the ferry would run so they could return home. Today, the ferries will transport all stranded tourists off the island.
The Dong Bai - Cai Vieng ferry service transports passengers from downtown Hai Phong to Cat Ba Island, covering a distance of approximately 1.86 km and taking 15 to 25 minutes. However, congestion frequently occurs at this ferry terminal on holidays and weekends. In bad weather conditions or with strong winds, the ferry service will also cease operations to ensure safety.
