Quang Binh-Quang Tri Tourism: Opening up new horizons - Part 2: Opportunities for a diverse destination

(QBĐT) - When the two provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri merge, can a new tourism center with a strong identity and diverse products be formed and developed sustainably? Experts say that if planned and implemented properly, this merger will create a new tourism space, where all the elements converge: majestic nature, deep history, unique cultural identity, diverse ecosystem and potential for international connection.

The perfect piece
In 2024, Quang Tri tourism will welcome more than 3 million visitors, an increase of 48.4% compared to 2023. From its existing potential and advantages, Quang Tri is focusing on three main directions: Cultural-historical tourism, mountainous community tourism and developing the Cua Tung-Cua Viet-Con Co island area into a resort destination. Meanwhile, Quang Binh still maintains a solid position with more than 5.2 million visitors in 2024, notably Son Doong, a majestic cave system and sea tourism.
In Quang Binh, tourists have long been fascinated by geological wonders such as Phong Nha-Ke Bang, Son Doong Cave, or the blue Nuoc Mooc Stream... Quang Tri is a living museum of revolutionary war, with Quang Tri Citadel, Hien Luong-Ben Hai banks, Khe Sanh fire line, Highway 9, historic Ho Chi Minh Trail...

If in the past, the two localities developed independently, when merging into provinces, the tourism map will be expanded in the direction of connecting from nature to history, from sea to forest, from resort to discovery, creating a diverse product chain for many groups of tourists. Dr. Tran Tu Luc, Head of the Faculty of Economics and Tourism, Quang Binh University, affirmed that Quang Binh-Quang Tri tourism is the perfect piece of each other. The differences in terrain, landscape and history between the two localities are not barriers, but the potential to create a series of unrepeatable experiences.
While Quang Binh develops eco-tourism and nature exploration, Quang Tri tourism strongly develops historical tourism products. With a system of revolutionary relics, tunnels, cemeteries, historical sites associated with the resistance war against the US to save the country, Quang Tri has a special advantage in developing gratitude tours, educating revolutionary traditions, connecting the young generation with national history.
If Quang Binh tourism still focuses on exploring nature and is heavily seasonal, when merged, Quang Tri tourism products will contribute to deepening the cultural and historical depth of the entire region, and at the same time become a piece to complete and build four-season tourism products.
“This is what Quang Binh is lacking in its tourism product chain. This addition not only helps tourism in the whole region avoid the situation of “seasonal hunger, seasonal hunger”, but also expands the reach of international tourists,” Dr. Luc added.
Connecting spaces, expanding experiences
On the journey to explore the Central heritage land, tourists can completely start the journey at Phong Nha-Ke Bang, stay overnight in Dong Hoi, move to Quang Tri Citadel, Hien Luong Bridge, continue to Cua Viet beach, Con Co island or explore community tourism in Huong Hoa, Dakrong. Such journeys have existed for a while, but when entering the province, the seamlessness of infrastructure, communication, and tour organization will help the inter-provincial tour to move to a more complete and systematic scale.
This connection will also optimize international promotion, especially when Quang Binh has a good foundation for global brand communication, while Quang Tri is promoting digitalization, fanpages, mobile applications, etc.

As one of the enterprises that have exploited products in both localities, Mr. Le Luu Dung, Director of Jungle Boss Company Limited (Quang Binh) said that the merger of Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces will open up a multi-dimensional picture with promising opportunities. Currently, Jungle Boss is organizing adventure and camping tours at Rao Quan Lake, Ta Puong (Quang Tri), while still maintaining tours in Quang Binh. With a realistic perspective, he emphasized that the merger will create a more attractive destination, with higher competitiveness than other localities thanks to the combination of Quang Tri's rich history with Quang Binh's unique natural resources.
When entering the province, businesses will have the opportunity to optimize resources and infrastructure, expand the labor market and improve the quality of human resources for the tourism industry, better meeting the increasing needs of tourists. This is also an opportunity to introduce indigenous cultural values such as Le Thuy folk songs, sac bua singing, traditional festivals, highland cuisine, local products, etc., contributing to increasing the length of stay, average spending and satisfaction of tourists.
Rich in culture and identity
After the merger, the tourism space of Quang Binh-Quang Tri has been expanded geographically, while becoming rich in culture and identity. The two lands with different nuances, from landscape to community life, are the precious materials to form a distinct tourism identity - something that many destinations currently lack.
“We can easily build unique inter-regional tourism products, extend the length of stay and create more accompanying services to increase revenue,” said the Director of Jungle Boss Company Limited.

On the same new strip of land, visitors can clearly feel the transition from the quiet, sacred nature of the ancient citadel, Hien Luong-Ben Hai to the wild, majestic beauty of Phong Nha, Son Doong; from the folk-style Le Thuy folk songs to the colorful A Rieu Ping festival of the Western Truong Son. If we know how to organize and exploit, this diversity will not cause confusion, but on the contrary, help form specialized tourist areas, each with its own nuances, together creating a unique cultural-tourism symphony.

In particular, the Ho Chi Minh Western branch is considered an iconic connecting axis, converging both majestic nature and historical depth. On the route from Bo Trach, Le Thuy (Quang Binh) to Huong Hoa, Dakrong (Quang Tri), visitors can explore the pristine beauty of old forests, caves, rapids, villages of the Van Kieu, Khua, May people..., interspersed with heroic destinations such as Tam Co cave, Road 20 Quyet Thang, Ta Con airport, Road 9-South Laos. The cultural values of the Bru-Van Kieu people scattered along the Ho Chi Minh Western route of the two provinces are also impressive highlights when building tourism products based on cultural factors. Each land is a unique nuance, a unique drum beat in the cultural and tourism symphony of the new land.
If we know how to invest in infrastructure, organize systematic tours and exploit them in depth, the Ho Chi Minh West axis can completely become the "backbone" of the inter-provincial tourism product chain, helping to spread visitors to areas far from the center, prolonging the length of stay and creating a unique identity for the entire destination after the merger.
