Nearly 690 million international tourists made trips between January and June, up 33 million from the same period in 2024. The report also pointed to a strong recovery across regions, with Africa leading the way with a 12% increase in international tourist arrivals. Asia and the Pacific recorded an 11% increase, with Northeast Asia leading the way with a 20% jump. Meanwhile, Europe welcomed nearly 340 million international visitors, up 4%.
Along with the increase in tourist numbers, international tourism spending has also increased significantly. Spending by Chinese tourists abroad increased by 16% in the year to March. Other countries also recorded solid growth, with the UK and Spain increasing by 15% and 16% respectively; Singapore and South Korea increasing by 10% and 8% respectively.
UNT Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said international tourism continues to show strong momentum and impressive resilience. He stressed that the sector not only contributes to the economy but also creates jobs and improves livelihoods for local communities. However, he also highlighted the need to ensure tourism growth is sustainable and inclusive.
The United Nations Tourism Organization expects this positive growth trend to continue throughout the second half of this year.
