Spain welcomes record number of tourists in summer

Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) said on October 2 that the country welcomed 22.3 million international tourists in the two peak summer tourist months of July and August, marking an all-time high.

In August alone, Spain recorded 11.3 million international visitors, up 2.9% compared to the same period in 2024, with tourists mainly coming from the UK, France and Germany. The previous July saw 11 million visitors, up 1.6% compared to the same period last year. This brings the total number of visitors to 22.3 million in the two months mentioned above, surpassing the record of 21.8 million visitors recorded in 2024.

In the first eight months of this year, Spain welcomed nearly 66.8 million international tourists, an increase of 3.9% over the same period last year and a new record high. Tourism is now an important driving force of the country's economy .

However, the "overtourism" situation in Spain is facing opposition from people in many famous destinations such as Barcelona or the southern coastal city of Malaga.

Residents fear the huge influx of visitors will change community life and push up rents as many properties are converted into tourist accommodations.
