Searching for, identifying and bringing the remains of martyrs back to their homeland is the desire and aspiration of their families, comrades and today's generation.
Back to the homeland
This July, the family of Mr. Ly Van Tan, in Khon Chu village, Loc Binh commune, no longer has to worry and grieve over not being able to visit the grave of his brother, martyr Ly Thanh Phan, to burn incense. At the end of last year, the martyr's remains were brought back to his hometown cemetery for burial.
Mr. Tan shared: Mr. Phan was born in 1955, joined the army in 1973 and directly participated in many fierce and fierce battles on the Southwest battlefield. In 1980, his family received his death notice, everyone was heartbroken and always wanted to find his grave to bring him back to his hometown. More than 40 years later, in 2024, we learned that he was buried in a cemetery in Gia Lai province. With the support of a number of organizations and individuals, at the end of 2024, his family was able to welcome him to rest in his hometown martyrs' cemetery. From now on, I can bring my children and grandchildren to clean, care for, and burn incense at his grave.
Like Mr. Ly Van Tan's family, welcoming the remains of the martyr back to his hometown for burial is also a happiness and a long-standing wish of the family of Mr. Chu Van Thang, Ao Kham village, Tan Thanh commune, the nephew of martyr Chu Van Long (born in 1949). Martyr Chu Van Long enlisted in 1971, died in 1972 at the Western Front, Military Region 4 and was buried at the Vietnam - Laos international cemetery.
According to Mr. Thang, for more than 50 years, his grandparents, father and uncles have always wanted to find Uncle Long's grave, but the search process was difficult and arduous. In 2024, after finding the address of the cemetery where Uncle Long was buried, his family immediately submitted a request to the local government to support bringing Uncle Long's remains back to his hometown cemetery for burial. In November 2024, the family welcomed Uncle Long back. On the day of welcoming Uncle Long, all the children and grandchildren in the family were emotional. "Bringing Uncle Long back to his hometown was the greatest wish that my grandparents told us before they passed away," Mr. Thang shared.
The above are just 2 martyrs of Lang Son province who have been returned to their homeland. From 2021 to now, the province has organized the verification of 31 grave information; exhumed, gathered, and handed over 30 martyrs' remains for burial in the martyrs' cemetery in accordance with the correct procedures. Relevant agencies and families of martyrs organized the exhumation and handover of martyrs' remains to local Party committees and authorities to ensure solemnity, compliance with regulations, and in accordance with local customs and practices. The return of martyrs' remains to their homeland partly fulfilled the wishes of the martyrs' families.
