According to statistics published in the newspaper Welt am Sonntag ( World on Sunday), cited by the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Berlin, a total of 309,852 people were officially granted German passports last year. This is a record number since Berlin began conducting surveys and statistics on this issue in 2000.
The data above was compiled from 14 out of Germany's 16 states. Currently, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony-Anhalt have not yet released their data, while Lower Saxony, Saarland, and Schleswig-Holstein have only provided preliminary figures and have not yet released their final consolidated reports.
The sharp increase in naturalization is mainly due to migrants who arrived in Germany in 2015 and 2016 now meeting the minimum residency requirements. In addition, the previous coalition government in Germany also adjusted the regulations, shortening the residency period required for citizenship from 8 years to 5 years.
Although the number of new citizenship applications in some localities has shown signs of slowing down recently, experts predict that the demand for German citizenship among Ukrainian citizens will increase sharply next year. This is because the temporary protection mechanism that the European Union (EU) has applied to Ukrainian refugees since the conflict broke out is expected to expire in March 2027.
Representatives from several states believe that many Ukrainian refugees are taking advantage of the shortened residency period of five years to complete the citizenship process, thereby securing long-term legal status in Germany. However, Ukrainians currently under protection can only obtain German citizenship if they fully meet the stipulated conditions.
Previously, in 2024, Germany recorded approximately 292,000 cases of naturalization, a 46% increase compared to the previous year.
Germany's amended Citizenship Act officially came into effect in mid-2024. In addition to shortening the residency requirement to five years, the law also stipulates that foreigners who acquire German citizenship are essentially allowed to retain their original citizenship. The German federal government continues to maintain these reform policies.
