German and Italian police arrested more than 100 people on May 3 in a crackdown on Italy's Ndrangheta organized crime group.
The suspects were charged with money laundering, tax evasion, fraud and drug trafficking, mafia-style criminal association, and weapons possession and trafficking, according to Reuters. The arrests were part of a joint investigation involving Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
The 'Ndrangheta originated in the southern region of Calabria, Italy. It has surpassed Cosa Nostra to become Italy's most powerful mafia group and one of the world's largest criminal networks. Italian and Belgian investigators believe the group smuggled nearly 25 tons of cocaine between October 2019 and January 2022, moving more than €22 million ($24.2 million) from Calabria to Belgium, the Netherlands and South America.
