While pouring cleaning solution into a septic tank to unclog drains, residents in Gia Lai were unexpectedly burned by splashing water and had to be hospitalized for emergency treatment.

On May 10th, Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital announced that it had just provided emergency treatment to a patient who suffered burns due to an accident while using drain cleaner in a toilet.

The victim was Mr. Tran Van Thai (residing in Nghia Hoa commune, Chu Pah district).

Mr. Thai suffered burns to his face after using a bottle of super-fast drain cleaner.

On the evening of May 8th, noticing his family's toilet was clogged, he bought a bottle of G-Okay drain cleaner. The bottle advertised it as a super-fast drain cleaner with ingredients including water and sulfuric acid, along with warnings such as: keep out of reach of children, avoid contact with skin, wear glasses and a mask when using…

As Mr. Thai poured the solution into the toilet drain, a loud explosion occurred, followed by a column of water spraying onto his face and hands. Fortunately, he was wearing glasses, so the solution did not get into his eyes. However, the areas of skin that came into contact with the solution were painful and burning, so he immediately went to the Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Upon examination, doctors determined that he had third-degree burns to his face and neck, and burns to his forearms caused by a corrosive substance, so they transferred him to the Department of Trauma, Orthopedics, and Burns for treatment.

Previously, Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital also received a case of Ms. NTKH (residing in Bien Ho commune, Pleiku city) who suffered burns to her hand due to an explosion caused by using a Paris PSG super-fast drain cleaner. Not only did it cause Ms. H. pain, but the wound also became infected and has now left raised scars on her hand.

Following an incident involving the use of a drain cleaner, Ms. H. suffered burns to her arm, resulting in keloid scarring.

Dr. Duong Thai Thuan, Head of the Emergency Department at Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital, stated that the components of super-fast drain cleaner contain a high concentration of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), a rather dangerous acid. This acid has extremely strong chemical properties and often causes deep burns upon contact with the human body, destroying tissue structures such as skin, fat, tendons, and muscles, leading to necrosis from the outside in. Any part of the body that comes into direct contact with sulfuric acid is easily damaged, difficult to treat, and leaves severe sequelae.

"People should not use this solution on their own because it is very dangerous, easily leads to risks, and can affect lives. When a problem occurs with the pipes, they should seek professional repairmen to fix it safely and effectively." Doctor Thuan warned.
