While pouring solution into the septic tank to clear the drain, a resident in Gia Lai was suddenly burned by water foam and had to be hospitalized for emergency treatment.

On May 10, Gia Lai General Hospital announced that the unit had just performed emergency treatment on a case of burns due to an accident while using drain cleaner in the toilet.

The victim was Mr. Tran Van Thai (residing in Nghia Hoa commune, Chu Pah district).

Mr. Thai's face was burned after using a super fast drain cleaner.

On the evening of May 8, seeing that his family's toilet was clogged, he bought a bottle of G-Okay brand drain cleaner to use. On the bottle, it was advertised as a super-fast drain cleaner with ingredients of water and Sulfuric Acid, along with warnings such as: keep out of reach of children, do not let the drain cleaner come into contact with skin, wear glasses and a mask when using...

When Mr. Thai poured this solution into the toilet pipe, there was a loud explosion accompanied by a column of water splashing onto his face and hands. Fortunately, Mr. Thai was wearing glasses when using it so the solution did not splash into his eyes. However, the skin areas that the solution came into contact with caused pain and burning, so he immediately went to the Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Through examination, doctors determined that he had third-degree burns to his face, neck, and forearms due to corrosive substances, so they transferred him to the Department of Traumatology-Orthopedics-Burns for treatment.

Previously, Gia Lai General Hospital also received a case of Ms. NTKH (residing in Bien Ho commune, Pleiku city) who suffered burns on her hand due to using Paris PSG super-fast drain cleaner, which caused an explosion. Not only did it cause pain for Ms. H., the wound also became infected and has now left a keloid scar on her hand.

After the accident of using a super fast drain cleaner, Ms. H's arm was burned and left with a keloid scar.

Doctor Duong Thai Thuan - Head of the Emergency Department of Gia Lai General Hospital said that the ingredients of super fast drain cleaner contain a large amount of Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4), a very dangerous acid. This acid has extremely strong chemical properties, often causing deep burns when in contact with the human body, destroying tissue structures such as skin, fat, tendons, muscles... causing necrosis from the outside in. Any part of the body that comes into direct contact with sulfuric acid is easily damaged, difficult to treat and leaves serious sequelae.

“People should not use this solution on their own because it is very dangerous, risky, and can affect their lives. When a problem occurs with the pipeline, they need to find a professional repairman to fix it in the safest and most effective way.” Dr. Thuan warned.
