Martinez excited about the prospect of joining MU |
United are said to be looking for a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window after Andre Onana made some serious mistakes in the past two seasons. Onana himself refused to rule out the possibility of leaving Old Trafford. When asked if he would stay at United, Onana admitted: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see."
Martinez, meanwhile, is completing his fifth season with Villa after joining for £20m from Arsenal in September 2020. The Argentine goalkeeper bid farewell to the fans in his final game at Villa Park last month and could not hide his emotions.
Martinez has also attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League, but ESPN reports that the 32-year-old is keen to continue playing in Europe. United have now begun talks with Martinez and he is ready to join Ruben Amorim's side this summer.
Speaking to ESPN , journalist Leo Paradizo said: "Negotiations have begun, contacts have been made for Martinez to join Manchester United. Of all the options Martinez has, Manchester United is the destination that excites him the most. Clubs will need time, but Manchester United have acted."
In another development, Viktor Gyokeres refused to join MU and preferred to wear Arsenal's shirt.
MU also had Liam Delap rejected earlier this month. The "Red Devils" may continue to pursue other targets such as Napoli's Victor Osimhen or Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike.
