The EU fined Temu over $200 million for illegal sales.

On May 28, the European Union (EU) decided to impose a €200 million (approximately $232 million) fine on the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu for violating consumer protection regulations under the Digital Services Act (DSA), after authorities discovered numerous unsafe products being sold to European consumers.

This is the second major fine imposed by Brussels under the DSA framework since the law came into effect in 2022, following the decision to fine Elon Musk's social media company X 120 million euros at the end of 2025.

According to the European Commission's (EC) investigation, Temu failed to fully fulfill its obligations to identify, analyze, and control systemic risks related to the circulation of illicit goods on its platform, directly affecting the rights and safety of consumers in the bloc.

According to the EC's decision, Temu must submit a remediation plan and measures to comply with the DSA by the end of August. Failure to meet the requirements could result in further progressive penalties.

Following the announcement of the penalty, Temu issued a statement affirming its respect for the objectives of the DSA and the necessity of unified regulations for the European digital economy . However, the company argued that the fine was inappropriate and did not accurately reflect the changes the platform had implemented over time.
