Specifically, in May, Russia increased its exports of iron, steel, and related products to the European Union to 373.1 million euros, 29% higher than the previous month and 1.2% higher than a year earlier. The main sources of supply were semi-finished products made from iron or non-alloy steel (175 million euros), as well as iron alloys (81 million euros).

Italy increased its iron and steel imports by 1.6 times to €120 million, while Russian companies exported to the Netherlands 7.3 times more, worth €78.5 million. As a result, Russia became the leading supplier of iron and steel to the EU. South Korea rose to second place, increasing its exports by 30% to €366.4 million. India was in third place, with its supply halved to €353.8 million.
In addition, European imports of aluminum from Russia increased 1.5 times per month, reaching 97.8 million euros, the highest figure since October 2023. Germany saw the largest increase in imports of this metal from Russia, rising 11 times to 16.2 million euros, followed by Italy nearly four times at 18.7 million euros and Sweden five times at 7 million euros.
Earlier, in April, Spain resumed importing iron and steel from Russia after a three-month suspension. Madrid had stopped buying this metal from Moscow in December 2023 and suspended it until April 2024. In mid-spring, imports resumed with 21,300 tons worth 8 million euros. Spain also significantly increased its aluminum imports by 1.5 times, to 13 million euros, and increased its titanium imports from Russia by 1.9 times, worth 1.5 million euros.
