"The crucial moment"
When asked by reporters about the phone call, Trump said he had a lively exchange with the leaders of the three European powers (E3) and would send a US representative to a meeting this weekend in Europe with Zelenskyy to discuss the next steps.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he had just had a 40-minute discussion with Trump and his European counterparts to see how to move forward on "an issue that concerns us all."

Separate statements from the E3 group indicated that the leaders commended the US administration's mediation efforts to achieve a solid and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The British statement said: "The leaders agreed that this is a critical moment for Ukraine, for its people and for the common security of the Euro-Atlantic region."
"Before we met, we said we wanted to know a few things," Trump said. "They wanted us to meet this weekend in Europe, and we will make a decision based on the information they gather."
Trump also complained that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had not held elections in Ukraine for years and that Ukraine was facing "serious corruption."
Britain, France, and Germany, along with other European partners and Ukraine, have worked diligently over the past few weeks to finalize the initial US proposals, which included Kyiv ceding significant territory to Moscow, abandoning its NATO membership ambitions, and accepting limits on the size of its armed forces.
One of the key elements that the E3 powers are trying to achieve is potential security guarantees for Ukraine once a peace agreement is reached. "Preparations for a peace plan are proceeding urgently and will continue in the coming days," the E3 group stated.
Ukraine has agreed to the main points of the plan.
Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that Ukraine had agreed on the main points of a post-war reconstruction plan during online talks with Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and other senior US officials on December 11.

Zelenskyy said: "The principles in the economic document are perfectly clear and we are in complete agreement with the American side... A key general principle is that for high-quality reconstruction and tangible post-war economic growth to occur, genuine security must be paramount. When there is security, everything else will follow."
During discussions with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, Ukrainian officials, and senior military officers, Zelenskyy said work was underway on a 20-point "basic document" aimed at ending the war.
A key element in Ukraine's reconstruction plan is the establishment of an investment fund for sectors including rare earth metals – an area that the United States is seeking to develop.
