Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (December 9), President Zelenskyy stated: "I am ready for elections, and moreover, I ask... that the United States help me, possibly together with European colleagues, to ensure security for an election." He also proposed a specific time frame: "And then in the next 60-90 days, Ukraine will be ready to hold an election."

The statement came shortly after remarks from US President Donald Trump in an interview with Politico, in which he suggested that Ukraine was using war as a reason to delay the election.
"You know, they talk about democracy, but at some point it's no longer democracy," Trump remarked. President Zelenskyy strongly rejected this idea, calling it "completely unacceptable."
However, Ukraine has long pointed out a series of serious obstacles that make wartime elections nearly impossible. Ukrainian law currently prohibits holding elections during a state of war.
The logistical challenges were also enormous, from securing the right to vote for nearly a million soldiers at the front, to organizing for millions of internally displaced persons and those abroad. In addition, the question of how citizens in occupied territories and areas near the front lines would vote remained unanswered.
Nevertheless, President Zelenskyy said he would ask the Ukrainian parliament to consider legislative proposals that would allow elections even under martial law.
