According to RIA news agency on Wednesday (December 10), the aid shipment weighs 35 tons. Shobini Gunasekera, the Sri Lankan ambassador to Moscow, confirmed the information: "A plane carrying 35 tons of humanitarian aid has departed for Sri Lanka."
Ms. Shobini Gunasekera expected this relief shipment to arrive in Sri Lanka on December 10.

Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka in late November, causing one of the worst flooding disasters in decades, killing 635 people and affecting approximately 10% of the country's population, or an estimated 2.3 million people according to the United Nations.
Typhoon Ditwah was not a single event but a "double crisis," dealing a severe blow to a nation recovering from years of economic strain. This exacerbated the impact of the disaster and made the recovery process even more difficult.
"Cyclone Ditwah hit areas that were already weakened by years of economic stress," said Azusa Kubota, UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka.
UNDP is calling for increased early recovery support, focusing on restoring essential services, supporting affected households, especially women, children and the elderly, and repairing critical infrastructure to strengthen future resilience.
